14# barrels

Post by coolhand »

Just wondering if there will be a bull barrel run this year? I sure would love a 14 pounder. Thanks

Well this is going to be an expensive year for me :-). I'm going to have to sell off some stuff to get that Tollofson rifle paid for.

If BPTR was a viable sport still, a very heavy .50 caliber would be darn tempting.

The .50-2.5 would make a good long range target rifle if you can tolerate the recoil and the guy shooting next to you needs you to give him better earplugs. :D
But you better take a roll of duct tape and give it to the guy marling the hits in the pit to make the spotter plug a little bigger in diameter so it stays in the hole. :D

I would want to consider the .50-70, loaded as a target round, very closely before I jumped to the 2.5"

But a moot point, I'm gun broke, there is no BPTR to speak of anymore, and I don't really want to shoot anything other then the regular class. I just would like to see what I could do with a .50 however.

It is. Just not the one managed by the NRA. Which hopefully will make it more viable

BPTR is alive and well at Ben Avery in March and Byers in Sep. Been to both matches and nobody even mentioned the NRA - both were well run and a lot of fun especially without the NRA complaints.

Hey Kurt

What about a Saddle or #3 Sporter with a 30” 14#. 50-90 in the gentler 1/36” twist? Probably less rattlin the’ ol molars

A #3 has too much drop for a long range (or silhouette) rifle in my opinion - having shot one quite a bit at both venues. Not a good choice at all.

John if I was ever to build another it would have the 1/36 twist in a Business rifle as light as possible for hunting only and maybe busting bowling pins.
I have fun at the range with the guys shooting those little AR's at the pins. When they hit them the pins just wiggle a little and when I sneak in a shot at their pin it explodes or it will make summersaults around the pipe they are hanging from
but I use 118 gr of 2f and a 720 gr bullet. :D

I wouldn’t mind a lighter one too, my 16# bull is getting too heavy to shoot offhand and I just sold my Saddle big fifty in 1/22”. Kinda miss the saddle but not the recoil. Once or if the US/Cdn exchange rate gets better, I’ll get one in 1/36” too.

I got a little wimpy these last couple years and been spending a lot of time with the .44-77's and the little .40-65 but I just pulled the .50 out of the safe and a box of old loaded ammo from 08 left over from the Q and I will head to the range tomorrow if it don't rain too hard.
Mine has a HVY 34" barrel that comes in at just under 13# Sure like this rifle and it has had a lot of rounds through it and the rifle looks like it. :)
