I agree Bruce - too much is left unsaid to take a lot away from Pope's statement. Plus I've never seen the actual text quoted, only paraphrased.

If you read Roberts Schuetzen rifle book he has a bit of things to say about the 40-70 in the Sharps rifles chapter, and it amounts to the same thing, once you find out what the rifle will shoot it shoots well.

Great shooting, Kenny.

I now have 300 new unfired Jamison 405 cases - they size and measure so perfectly for 40-70 and the standard Shiloh chamber that you would think they were custom made. I'll get a couple hundred more and that will probably be all I ever need. Next rifle will be 44-77.

I'll order bullet molds this year for DDPP, thanks to Arnie/beltfed's generous advice and input. I'm also drawing up CAD designs for a copy of the original end-cutter Sharps PP bullet mold.

Slowly but surely reinventing the wheel.

I still have a bunch of jamison 40 70 ss and they are good. but, you cannot get them any more, which is why I went to the BA cases out of 30 40.
I want to use the same brass all the time...

I wish someone would buy Jamison and start a run of the 40 70 with the correct head stamp.
Here is one customer that would spend money..
anyone listening????

thanks..Ken

Might want to look up Mead Industry in Nebraska, contact them and let them know.

Tinkered with an original Remington Hepburn in 40-70 SS using 30-40 Krag cases fire formed with cornmeal.

The best I could do with grease groove bullets and currently available moulds was Saeco #645, Swiss One FG powder, Fed 210 primers.

Next best Ideal #406150 mould, (out of production), with Swiss Two FG powder and Fed 210 primers.

Everything else not worth mentioning.

Oddly enough, an original Ballard Pacific in 40-63 shoots just about anything well. Go figure?

Have yet to find a modern 40-65 that shoots poorly, two in particular much better than can be expected and certainly above my ability.

Well, like I said, the Jamison 405 is a perfect fit, trimmed for length. There is some available now on gunbroker...I’m getting 200 more from him and I’ll have all I’ll ever need.
