A question regarding tang sights

Post by Fiatmom »

I removed the eye piece from my tang sight and noticed that the elevation would not lock in place when I replaced it.
I thought bit did in the past but now I am not sure, Did I screw something up? I was shooting my Shiloh and the sight
moved a small bit after 50 or so rounds.

What sight are we talking about ? If MVA vernier check and make sure the nylon locking bushing is present ,that is the locking mechanism for the elevation on some MVA vernier sights.

It is the sight that was on the rifle when I got it. I think it is a MVA.
If I lost the ring where can I get another? I would also like to get a new eye piece with a larger aperture

Fiatmom,

You can use any material for the bushing, e.g. polywad material [ldpe]. If you cut a strip out of a plastic milk jug, you could make an "off-eye" blinder and use it for the missing bushing also.

The aperture in the eye cup can be drilled out to be larger, but I would suggest a Hadley style eye cup with multiple aperture sizes.
I like my MVA Montana eye cup because my eye sight is not the best and on a cloudy day I can switch to a larger "hole". MVA made a Montana eye cup for my Hoke tang sight, so I am sure they can fix you up even if your sight is not an MVA.

Keep on hav'n fun!

Call MVA they will send you a new one if you don’t to make one. The small MVA Hadley cup’s are very nice the big magnum one is to big on some rifles to get down to shorter ranges before it hits the stock.

Any good hardware store will have the nylon washer.
It's a #10.
Buy 2 or 3.

The #10 nylon washer has too small of an I.D. for my sight.
The #10 rubber washer I got obviously stretches, so fits great.
Other than not sliding as smoothly, is there any drawback to rubber that I am missing?

Thanks,
Tim

Rubber won't last.
Get the #10 nylon washer, wrap some sandpaper around a 8 or 10 penny nail and go to work on that hole.
Tomorrow, call MVA and see if they'll send you a couple.

Thanks!

Don't know why, but enlarging the hole never occurred to me. Must not have had enough coffee that day!!
