Swiss black powder

Post by mooner »

I have an opportunity to split a case of Swiss powder and would like information as to best grain size for a 45-90 and 40-65. Optimum size may not be the same for both. Also, what is best primer? Any information would be greatly appreciated.

Mooner,

I use 1 1/2 F Swiss in both a 45/90 and 40/65.. Primers is another can of worms, I use Fed.150M Large Pistol Primers for the 40/65 and WLR's for the 45/90

Mooner;
I also use 1 1/2 in several guns... works fine in a 40-70 SS, 45/70, 50/70, and 50/90. The 40/70 is my target rifle and I use Federal Large Rifle Mag. Bench Rest primers. All others use the Federal 215 (LRM)
Works for me..... BUT work with the primers a bit: The powder should be OK for your rifles. Good Luck

Mooner,
I use 1-1/2F and 2F Swiss in my 45-90 and 3F in my 40-65. The 40-65 likes 3F and a 150 large pistol primer. The 45-90 likes the 215 mag primer, I tried some 150's and 210's without much success. The 45-90 also likes the 570gr Paul Jones AA Smerker bullet. The above combo with this bullet gets me 2-1/2 x 3 inch groups at 200 yards. I hope this helps.
