I'm thinking that Ballard had a 38 XL [extra long] cartridge that was
essentially the .357 Max case only very slightly longer.

Dan,

That bullet diameter is too fat to allow two wraps of paper! 8)

Keep on hav'n fun!

Several years ago I made a post here about the original BPCR chambers having a long tapered lead from the chamber wall to the lands like Your drawing Dan and I got a lot of rhubarb from several posters saying that a lead was never used and wont work.
I'm glad that you and others are bringing this into the light that maybe there is some good to the long taper lead.
A lot of the misconception for the long taper not working was related to the straight free bore cylinder throat that gave a lot of problems when the wrong bullet design was used in them.

For those interested, the leade angle of CO's, 357 MAX chamber cast is approximately 6.45 degrees.
My 5° is .128" to the base of the lands from there it's 2°30".

Brandon's box is done and goes to the trophy shop this morning for engraving of the GNAT MAULER logo. It's versitile enough to use with most "Sub"- Caliber rounds, so Brandon can grow in his shooting and still use the box. I'll post a pic when it comes back from engraving.

Dan,

It looks like that bullet will be about 300 grains or so which is probably a good place to be. I think I'll have one cut for my 10 twist 35-30. I've been using 4F Swiss, drop tubed into the case so that you can just seat a .060" fiber wad and then compressing .250" to seat the PJ 35001. As I recall without looking at my notes this is about 29 grains of $f. I tried 3F Swiss and it was marginal at rams. I never chrono'd the 3F load but my chrono numbers for the 4F are in the 1130 fps range while the ES is more than is match worthy it will definitely knock down rams at Mexia. I have been using unannealed Starline brass and have occasionally split a case, generally on the side about where the bottom of the bullet would be. I plan to anneal and spend some additional chrono time in the next few weeks and will report back once I find the time to do the testing. This is a terrific round and deserves more attention.

Dan, Doc, CO,

Here is the sample of the "GNAT MAULER" that the trophy shop did. I turned in Brandon's and Doc Ammo box's this morning. I'll pick them up Tuesday.

The actual size is approximately 1.5 inches long and 1.25 inches tall.

Dan'l,

I don't think we need to cut any slack for Brandon. He shot a 9 today in very tough conditions. I decided my eye sight was good enough to shoot Irons again...... WRONG..............I only shot 7 better than Brandon. That kid is starting to get on my nerves.

I think we need to have tougher rules so these youngsters don't make fools out of fools. :) ..............................Jim

Yo Tasmanian Reb,

From what I see here, you are currently using too much rifle. If you cut your barrel off from the back end, do you suppose you could make it work for the .35-30 or do you suppose the Maynardian .35-25 would be even better?

Bullet design by Dan T for the 35-30 Maynard is in the mail on its way to Mr. Brooks. Hopefully we'll have a report on performance in a few weeks. Thanks again Dan.

We had a good discussion last night on the Thursday night chat group concerning the .357 Max/ 35-30 Maynard. I sure like mine and use it every month in our steel matches.
George Springer has a new bullet mold coming he said will drop a pill of about 300 grains and is looking forward to wringing it out. He said even the lessor bullets are about as long as the case alone, if I understood him correctly.
Sure is a peach of a case in a little rifle! I can't think of a better kids or ladies cartridge to get them interested and competing. MD

Dan,

It is the Brandon bullet with the nose lengthened to .600 instead of the .450 that you designed. My barrel is 1:10 so longer is ok. It currently makes round holes at 500 m with the PJ 35001. It has been a pretty forgiving cartridge shooting about everything I've stuffed in it well. I'm anxious to get the new mould and start load testing after the first of the year.

George, is your chamber a Max or Maynard in the Fisk gun? Your occasional case splitting you mentioned got me to wondering about that. MD

Frank M. joined us last night as well and said he is going to make one up too so it seems their will be a lot of testing going on with this little number. MD

Looking at Original 35-30 Maynard Cartrodges on Line...they have a case head that looks about twice the diameter of the case body...and a Very think Stepped Case Head...Didn't look anything like a .357 maximum too me...If those are Correct Original .35-30 Maynard Cases!?.. :?

Mike, it is a Max chamber. The case splitting, I've had two so far, I attribute to a case full of 4F swiss compressed .250". 4F will do that at times. The splits have been about a half inch in length about 3/8" from the case mouth, the case is actually cracked rather than split open. Each one was with the PJ bullet.
