Update....Buffalo Arms Southeastern Regional BPCR Shoot

Post by deerhuntsheatmeup »

Well guys and girls, It was a cold and windy day at pascagoula MS Saturday but the spirits were high and competition stiff. I, being a newcomer to this sport had no expectations and it was a good thing as I got by butt kicked , but also, it was a good learning experience for me.

Two guys from Georgia came down and kicked butt. Period! Excuse me if I get part of the names wrong but the winner of the Mid-range and also the Buffalo Shoot was Jerry English. Second in the Mid-Range was Greg Gazaway. I believe the winning score for the mid was 540 and second 534. These scores are WAY higher that my best ever. Like I said, I learned alot. One of the regular shooters in our bunch shot 528 and finished 4th. Doc finished third with I think a 532. All good scores with moderate winds but COLD. Let me say that Glen Hernandez' buffalo chili made the cold bearable and it was very good., as was Bills smoked ham.

I got the chance to spot on a great gcope during the buffalo shoot at 600, 800, and 1000 yards. I saw Greg Gazaway shoot a 5 inch group on the buffalo at 600 yards with a 40-65 high wall and that was impressive, especially considering the 600 yard flag was moving from 5 o'clock to 3 o'clock and whipping. Jerry English won the Buffalo shoot with 10 hits in regulation, ending in a 3 way tie with Fon and Doc. Won in a shoot off.

A great shoot and a great bunch of guys to learn from. I got to witness a 190 be shot from 300 yards and I shot my personal best of 179. While I hope to be competitive one day, I have alot to learn about conditions and apertures before I can shoot even close to this class of shooters. Also, I must work hard on my offhand shooting BIGTIME. A competitor cannot give up 30-50 points offhand and expect to compete for a championship.

Steve and Bill deserve a thank you for the hard work and putting on the shoot. We need more people to come and enjoy this shoot in the future to justify the hard work by these two guys and others.

The casinoes and fine restarants provide for a good trip to the Gulf Coast if you are wondering. A fine range and a great bunch of guys make this a fun shoot for all.

On a personal note, I competed with my Shiloh for the first time in this match. I was chasing sight settings somewhat at most yardages but the gun settled in and shot 5 of 6 10's with 3 x's at the end of my 300 yard relay. I chased the conditions at 600 and never did get happy with the sight picture or settings at 600 yards but still shot 20 for score with no misses. Like I said I am still new to this sport and am hooked, but their is much practice to do, to learn all their is to know. I'm stubborn and I will get there.

Have a good winter, cast plenty and shoot often, David Barfield

Thanks for the update! Got any info on what the top shooters were using? By the way, how did the new Kelley work out on the firing line and with those wind changes?

don't know many particulars

Post by deerhuntsheatmeup »

I don't know many of the particulars about equipment that was used in the shoot other than mine, and the way I shot, ya'll may not be interested in hearing my story, but here it is anyway. I really like the Baldwin front sight, I just need more experience using different apertures as I was not happy with the post and ball I shot with. I knew I would be chasing settings when I went to the shoot, but did not realize that the little things made that much difference. I also shot well from 300 yards the previous Sat using post and ball but it was shooting at a gong in bright sun light. Big difference in a gong and sunny day to paper and a gloomy overcast day. Like I said before, I got's lots to learn. Anyway, I was happy with the Kelley Soule as it performed well, no complaints at all. Adjustments were easy to make and consistent. I would not be scared to buy the same setup again. Not that it is any better than anyone elses setup, but I like what I bought. Enough for now, Later David Barfield

deerhuntsheatmeup,

Using apperture intsert sights are easy to figure out and easier yet on round targets. Use an insert that will give a good light all the way around the target, now close down the rear eye cup until it shows a cobweb and open back one. The eye will center a target easier this way and the target will be almost automaticly centered.
