Kreiger barrel with Henry rifling
Some time back there was discussion of this and I seem to remember someone had one.
Does anyone have anything to say on the performance of the above?

Re: Kreiger barrel with Henry rifling
As far as I'm concerned, Manufacturing quality and tolerances of a barrel determine accuracy - rifling shape plays much less a role. However, as someone shooting quite a few original Martini-Henry's with that rifling form, while they do work well, they are a bit of a fouling trap with all those angles. Still, I can shoot my Steyr-Martini in no.2 Misket (original roumanian military issue) dirty with PP loads (with grease cookie of course), with minimal blowtubing. Same goes for the 577-450 military rifles, BTW. I don't know if the Krieger rifling is as deep as the original, but the original rifling was pretty deep, predating the shallow rifling forms that were started off by Metford.
Throat configuration would play here a much more important rile IMO. Those old Bit rifles has a very shallow leade and no case stop, which seems to have a positive influence on fouling accumulation.

Keith here is the post by Dan that I think you were referring to. It would be a really interesting project to see through.

Dan never got that project off the ground. His bore diameter in the Krieger w/ Henry rifling was way oversize. Like close to .470 size!
He was in the process of trying to return it before he left us.

Wow that's pretty seriously over sized. It would be nice to try that idea out though. The ones barrels that Buffalo Arms has in stock are apparently .450 x .458, but I wonder if they are also off spec.
I'll bet that some of the older styles of rifling make a noticeable difference for fouling control in a PP rifle shooting black powder.

If you check the spec on Henry rifling, it is deep rifling - way more than .004. Bore dia. on a typical MH is .451, but I'm shooting .468 bullets - partly due to an oversize throat (by design), but still... It is DEEP rifling.

Re: Kreiger barrel with Henry rifling
I would be cautious with deep grooves. I'm working with a barrel now that has a .006" deep grooves. They should hsve been .438"/.446" nd it came .438/.4495" and the vertical is bad using a soft PP bullet patched .002 over bore diameter. I have spent many hours lapping just the land tops to lessen the groove depth and it is starting to tighten the groups, but I still have a way to go till I get what I want from that barrel. The ES was in the mid 20's to 30 before I started to lapp the bore. Now I'm getting the mid teens.
The chamber is to tight to load a GG, but IO have breach seated some soft GG that where .447" (this is a .44) and checked the ES and they run in the single digits.
Be careful with the deep grooved bore if you plan on using a tight chamber shooting a PP bullet. Greasers you can adjust.

I put an order in for one. Just to try in a spare action I have.COBPTR wrote:Dan never got that project off the ground. His bore diameter in the Krieger w/ Henry rifling was way oversize. Like close to .470 size!

I asked about the return of the oversize bore and this is the reply I got.
And my appologies to Krieger for the spelling, the Edit beat me
Keith
I don't think I've ever seen a Henry rifled barrel come back for any reason in the time I've been here (14 years).

Re: Kreiger barrel with Henry rifling
keith, there is no such thing as an oversized barrel.
you just have a reamer and mould to fit.

Sorry to resurrect the topic, Perentie, did you manage to get the Krieger Barrel with Henry Rifling?

Re: Kreiger barrel with Henry rifling
No. I got the Krieger with standard rifling in the end.
