Bore Scope Recommendation

Post by Waldo »

After my most recent carbon ring issue I think it may be time to consider a Bore Scope. Any recommendations ? I see there are some cheap camera scopes out there or the more expensive Hawkeye.

Thanks,
Wally

The camera scopes do not have the resolution to see the carbon and other imperfections in a rifle bore.

I have used both and only the Hawkeye showed me what was there.

I've never had any doubt the Hawkeye is the best currently available unit. It is expensive but will also accommodate camera use and high powered LED options.
It also has a right angle eye piece option.

I concur with Mike & Dave. I have a Hawkeye with the right-angle eyepiece & have also tried a couple of the cheaper USB/PC input types. So far nothing works near as well as the Hawkeye.

I am considering the Hawkeye 17" kit. Still unsure about the angled eye piece.

You need to look at the Lyman Borecam. For the money (approx. $200), it will do 90% of what the Hawkeye does. Google it for reviews. FWIW.......

Jim,

Good comment. I've come across very good reviews on the Lyman. Since I already had a Hawkeye before the Lyman was introduced I forgot about it.

Jim and Wayne,

I checked the reviews on the Lyman last night and they are mixed. The price point is definityly appealing. Several reviewers say it can see carbon rings and leading? Overall after reading the reviews I was left thinking the Hawkeye has better magnification, resolution and better overall build quality but the Lyman was adequate for most non professional use. Brownells has the Lyman on sale now for $219.00.

Thanks for the suggestion,
Wally

Jim, Wayne

Have either of you used or know anyone that has used the lyman borescope?

I just watched the video that LYMAN has on there web site. I must say I was impressed. I am now thinking I will buy it from Brownells where it is on sale for $219. Then I can try it and return it if it does not perform as advertised. My experience with Brownells has been they really stand behind there products and really go the extra mile to keep you happy.

If I buy the Lyman I can use the money I save to buy an annealing machine. I have about 1000 45-70 and 40-65 cases in need of annealing.

Rowdy Rick on this forum I think uses one. I seen a picture he sent that looks every bit as good as my Hawkeye scope does.

Wally,
I have a friend who has the Hawkeye and it is a great device, however I could not justify the cost.

I purchased the Lyman six months ago and have not looked back. It does everything I need it to do at a realistic price. Just remember that technology keeps improving and costs keep going down. Good luck on your decision. :) ..............
