I agree that there's no point in reinventing the wheel. Black powder bullet designs are largely based on the physics of how this old technology works. I'd love it if my silhouette rifle shot like my f-class but that defeats the purpose and lore of shooting these pieces of history.

With that being said, I am currently experimenting with an elliptical micro groove bullet in my 17 twist 45-2.6". My initial intent with this bullet was not to have laser-like trajectories but rather edge out some wind errors and because of its higher bc, cut down on flight-time, even if it's a fraction of a sec. This bullet shoots pretty well even in my stock 45-2.4" with its 18 twist but I've also only shot it to 500 yards in both rifles. I'm still experimenting and learning as I go but the key things to pay attention to cast them hard, like 12:1. Second is driving them as fast as you can comfortably manage. No doubt that my round nose and creedmoor bullets are much easier to get to shoot well but half the fun of this sport is learning.

If you shoot a .22 rim fire rifle a lot at 100 yards have you paid attention and noticed that a high velocity .22 rim fire drifts more in the wind then a standard velocity?

Yes, but that bullet is also lighter... Even a fast BP bullet will still mainly be subsonic. Even When shooting at1000.

Sighhhh, the final arbiter in the search for the best combination for the individual rifleman is the target.

so the target might be anywhere from 200 to 1000 yds.
one group doth not an accurate load make.
some days you can shoot better than others.
some days you can aim better than others.
some days you go to shoot and it rains.
you need to have an optimized barrel condition for that bullet, with/without lube.
you need to try different alloys.
you need to try different wads.
and more.
allow a year to wring out a bullet properly.
and you need to wring out other bullets similarly to have a fair comparison.
keep safe,
bruce.

All part of the fun Bruce. Yeah, and about five matches in a row is a fairly good indication of how the combination of Rifle, load and shooter performs.

Just rolled in from the range after a chronograph session with my ammo and rifle from The Lodi Cup Match. Five shots, ES-2 AVG 1328 fps the load is in issue #99 of Black Powder Cartridge News, page 56.

BTW, 80.5 grains of swiss 2F duplicates that load on the chronograph and the target. Same volume of each.

Buy lead by the ton, powder in 50lb lots, primers in sleeves of 5M, tin by the trunk load, get consistent and listen carefully to the target. Or, read the match results & load reports in the Black Powder Cartridge News. and get way ahead in the game. :D

bob,
there are 2 ways to increase b.c. and one of them is to reduce drag by using smooth sided bullets.
the other is that lengthening the ogive increases b.c.
however this method has proven that an ogive length of 1.5 calibres is about as long as you can go with cast bullets, even as hard as 12:1.
this is because they will set back to 1.5 calibres anyway when you fire them, and will often bend in doing so.
zack,
those chrono figures look good.
but there is no guarantee that your load will behave similarly in my rifle.
i have to do my own homework, as does everyone.
keep safe,
bruce.

OK Bruce, oh well then....won't bother to recount 1.5 inches of vertical for 14 shots at 600 yards then. Would be no benefit at all. :(

zack,
that translates to 1/4 moa.
my eyes can barely aim 1 moa on a good day wearing knobloch shooting lense.
yes i would like to shoot like that, but alas reality says it will not happen.
i have to set my sights lower (pissweak joke).
what i am trying to say also, is that your load will not necessarily suit my gun, although it might..
where do you get the bpc news?
keep safe,
bruce.

bill, i am sure you are right but.
sometimes you have to look at the world through someone else's eyes.
or in this case a target through the sights with my eyes.

Terrrrrfic day of shooting from the 1,000 yard line today. Virtually no wind, 85 F for a high, 8% humidity in Tucson, Arizona. Bright sunny skies.

Got a new lot of Swiss 1.5. By volume the old lot weighed 83.5 grains, the new lot 79.0 grains same volume.

Joy of joys, the new lot ten shots went into about 1.5 minute windage and two minutes vertical. Only scored 96x2, devastated the nine ten ring @ 7:00 though. The target is happy and so am I. :D
