Reading the new sight post reminded me of the early days when my shop calipers were Vernier scaled before I could afford a dial unit. This was long before digital calipers and I still have them here some where. They worked perfectly and were practically indestructible.
I have always used calipers ten times more than a mic when machining as they are accurate enough for most application and far faster to work.
The scale is far more handy for sight regulation than would be reading thousands directly.
