You don't like it because it doesn't roll you over backwards like a tumbleweed when you jerk on the trigger on it

If you need help digging out that 40-65 give me a call
Kurt wrote:I have a .40-65 Browning I don't like that I been thinking about chambering to the .40-82 but I don't know if the 16 ROT will do well enough for long range.
As far as long range, if you just use that bullet I told you to use, drop +/- 66 grs 2F Old E & a 0.060 walters in the case, they'll avg 1350 fps all day long, and not a lot of compression
I've been told 1350 fps is supposed to be a "magic" #

And don't worry Kurt, it did go off, trust me, just have patience, wait about 3 seconds, your spotter will tell you so, "You hit it", if I remember, is her favorite phrase

Introduced in 1976, the 40 70 SS was the standard for years in the mid range.
I have a Shiloh in the 40 70 SS and have no trouble with it.

I find the JBA brass good but the brass made from the 30 40 Craig case is perfect. it has a slight bevel to the rim and the breach just slides over a case that may be out just a little. NO case sticking and ejecting is strong.

I use the 420, 392 BA and 55 W paper wet wrapped. It slides in the fired case, and a factory crimp die 'touch' to hold the bullet is all you need.
this load holds 64 grains of OD 1 1/2 with slight compression.

I feel that if you are buying an 1874, and the history means something to you. going with an original calibre makes it more accurate.

Kenny I agree with you on the .30-40 stretched BA cases in the .40-2.5 Shiloh. I started with this brass and I have lost very few in the 15 plus years I used them. The cases I lost were from mishandling during reloading or that got stepped on. The Hornady are ideal for the PP. The stretched cases from BA you just have to make sure they are for the Shiloh and not the C Sharps.
My .40-2.5 has a 34" barrel and it will not make weight for Silhouette so it will get shortened to 30" and along with my new .40-65 will be for that game.
I see a lot of comments that the .40-70 is temperamental and hard to get to shoot, I cant say that. Feed the rifle with the right bullet and load it will shoot like most any rifle/caliber will.

I sure like that Church Bell target !! the first time I shot it during practice that thing rang like a bell that made me turn around to see where that sound came from :D

G'day folks

This is a typical group on the 500m ram from my Shiloh '74 in .40-70SS, providing I do my bit, can see through the iron sights and the wind don't get too strong. :D

Dunno why I dropped the low shot in, perhaps I need a spotter.

Load is a 440gr GG bullet ( 20-1 ) out of a Brooks mold I got made with reduced first 2 bands, .030 Walters veg wad on top of 68gr of 2f Swiss powder.

Are you talking about the official NRA sized 1000 yrd target?
If it rang like that you placed it on the 44" 8 ring, it does sound off well, it's 1/4", you should hear it through the radios :D
I don't call it a church bell, though it rings like one, I call it............................. "The Mulhern"

You aren't going to be splattering any diamonds, the points are in the wrong spots, they're at 12 & 6 o'clock, not 10 & 2 .............remember

:D It was the first shot fired at that target and the wind was right that it was loud and it was a long ring. I asked Carol what the heck was that and she said you hit at 7 O clock.
Don't matter where the points are I will hit them. :D

I noticed something this AM while loading the 40 70 ss (before church of course)
I am using a 64 grain charge of OE 1 1/2 through a BP automatic measure with drop tube attached.
very accurate on the charges (I weigh them occasionally )

I am using the 30 40 Craig brass, which as I said I like a lot, with the 420 BA, PP mold at .392 and BA 9 pound paper, 25% cotton.

I noticed two of the cases were full to the top almost with this charge ????
After checking everything...the two cases were JBA brass that got in the wrong container.
I double checked and the JBA case filled up to the top with 64, while the 30 40 left enough room to
seat the PP bullet ...
must be thicker brass?????
I like the 30 40 because of the slight bevel to the rim...slides over the breach......
