40-60 Maynard?

Post by John W »

Gentlemen/Ladies,

In my continued search for the caliber for my upcoming 1877, I've been considering the 40-70SS, the 45-70, and now the 40-60 Maynard.

I've decided to put off the 40-70SS as it seems the consensus thought here is that the 40-70SS is a difficult cartridge to get to shoot accurately. The 45-70 is of course a standard, but I have two Shiloh's already in that caliber, and am wanting something different... I wish to stay away from the 40-65 (for me, it is just not an attractive looking round - superficial of me I know...)

What is the thought here about the 40-60 Maynard (and can it be had from Shiloh? As I may understand it, Shiloh may not have a reamer for the 40-60 Maynard?).

Shiloh would only do a .40-65 for me when I tried to order a .40-60 Maynard.
I do have a .40-60 Maynard on a CPA.

Shiloh will no longer do the .40-60 Maynard chamber.

But then it is getting more difficult for me to find .30-40 Krag cases to make .40-60 Maynards.

I prefer the straighter wall of the .40-60 Maynard over the more tapered .40-65.
I have both and they seem to hold the same amount of powder.

Thank you. Yes, I do prefer the straight case of the 40-60 Maynard as well - it just looks "right". I was trying to research the round as much as I can, and I've not yet come across anything "bad" about it. Indeed, I am finding that there are many reports of it doing very well up to maybe 600 yards?

I wonder why Shiloh will no longer do the 40-60 Maynard.

If you go to gunbroker and Search under "Shiloh" there's a 77 in 40-50ss for sale. Nothing too fancy but it's killing me just sitting there, someone needs to buy it so I don't have to. I talked with the seller a little and it was part of the first batch off the line. Number 15 if I remember right.

40-50's maybe small compared to the other sharps cartridges but it's a mighty little round! My 40-50 bn is still impressing me with accuracy and does well even on the rams.

Yes! I saw that one too! But I already have an 1877 hopefully coming in soon... Just trying to decide on the caliber once I get the letter from Shiloh Sharps...

Graf & Sons has 30-40 cases. Their head-stamp & Hornady.

The 40-50SS has held one of the BPCR national records for a number of years, so will definitely knock down the animals.

can .303 brit cases be formed to this case?
this case has a good reputation for accuracy, as does the 40/72.
the 40/2.5 is in between in length.
could this suggest that those who can't make it shoot have yet to go the full mile.
or is there somethig wrong with their rifles, chambers, or brass?
we hear about pope's opinion of the 40/70, but not the context of his opinion.
he was a scheutzen shooter, and the 40/70 would be unsuited to that discipline at pope's level due to recoil alone.
there are more accurate scheutzen rounds, like the 32/40, but they are unsuited to say silhouette ot mid range target.
the difference is a fine line.
choose a good powder, match the primer and compression, use a good bullet suited in length, desiign, and fit to the barrel dimensions and twist, in a well put together rifle, and the 40/70 will shoot as good as anything in its class.
keep safe,
bruce.

The .303 British cases make .40-60 Maynard cases 0.10 too short.

I agree with the 'look' of the round. I have a 40 70 SS and it looks great with the 420 PP round.
superficial, yup, but that's me!....a straight case is my thing.
Why go through all the trouble getting a 'new' Sharps from the 1800s and put a modern round in it?

Sharps loaded the 40 70 SS as the standard Mid range so It's obviously a good round. The ALL take work..that's why we do it!

good shooting...Ken

I was at Shippensburg, Pa silhouette match when Eric Stevens set a long run record on turkeys with his 40-50 Stevens. He probably could have shot more, but he ran out of ammo. His shooting, that rifle, and Barry Harmon's spotting got it done that day.
