Best place to purchase Swiss Black Powder?

Post by Trigger1212 »

Evening Gents,

Need to resupply my BP stocks, will be picking up Swiss 1.5F. I've looked at Buffalo Arms who I've done business with before. Any other good suggestions? Hazmat fee should be about the same for all, ($30.00-$35.00 if I remember correctly). BA has it for about $29.00 a lb, looked at Graff & Sons and they are out, Powder Inc. was about $34.00 a lb. Who am I missing that might beat BA AND have good service? Dang stuff is spensive!

Cheers!

Also check out the Maine Powder House. They used to offer free shipping/hazmat when buying a case lot.

powderinc.com is my favorite. Good prices, great service, and they support our matches. I am not sure where you are getting the 34 bucks a pound you posted above. Case price from powder inc is $612.50 and that includes shipping. That makes it $24.50 a pound delivered. Am I missing something?

Just looked and your price is correct . $24.50 per pound including haz-mat to your door. I ordered some Swiss a few years ago and I think I may have paid a little more than that. Fast service when I ordered. :D :D :D

SSS - Looks like the Maine Powder House is no longer in business, bummer.

Jackrabbit - I had looked at Powder Inc and selected the 5lb option and it is $173.50 / 5 = $34.70 a pound. I should have done the math on the 25 lb lot to get the max discount option. I like the $24.50/lb part but not too excited about the 25 lb part! That's a whole lot of powder, would have to do a lot of shooting to use that up, but then that is not a bad thing either, guilt myself into shooting more... Another good thing would be that if I developed a great load I would not have to worry about switching powder lots doing a number on the load. Always looking for the silver lining  . I did not see anywhere on the site where shipping charges were discussed at all, guess I'll have to call them directly to verify the "shipping/Hazmat included" claim. Would be great if that is correct.

All kidding aside that is a lot of powder, my largest case currently is a 30-06 so not used to using huge amounts of powder. Will have to readjust my thinking for this silly-wette game, lots more rounds down range and larger case volume.

When you all order powder what quantities do you usually order it in? I realize finances will dictate some of this but maybe because of the "lot" issue most of you order in larger quantities than I expected?

Cheers!

No question about it, Powder Inc's price include the hazmat and all shipping. That is why the per pound price on the lower quantities is high. The hazmat and shipping are spread over a smaller number. Most everyone that I know orders powder a case at a time, at least. There can be significant differences in the powder between lots and it is nice to have a large quantity that you know is the same. Also, I don't know where it goes, but it disappears fast. When I first started I bought a case and thought it would be a lifetime supply. Now I am using 1- 2 cases per year.....
Good luck, Cody

How could one not be excited about 25 lbs of powder :D
I've got over a 100 lbs on hand :D I'm quite sure that there's folks on here that have a wee bit more on hand than that at any given time
I shot up a lot of black powder last year & am concerned that I don't have enough  The girls are getting carried away

Let's do some math: 45-70, 70 gr. per round equals 100 rounds to the pound or 2500 to the case. On average I burn 2 to 3 pounds finding a load that works every time I get a new case leaving me with 2200 rounds. This summer my shooting schedule, so far, has me shooting 37 days of Silhouette at 60 rounds per day for 2220 rounds. If I only had one case on hand I would be out of powder before I start my first match. This does not include Long Range or Gong matches I will shoot and there are about 20 days worth of those at 50 rounds per day minimum for another 1000 rounds but as stated earlier I use the 45-90 for those so I'm only getting about 85 rounds to the pound for another 12 pounds.

Trigger, point is if you only buy 5 lb. at a time by the time you find the right load you'll only have about 200/300 shots left before you're ordering again. That means you're only running at about 60% efficiency so add the cost of the two pounds used developing the load to the three you have left and you have your true cost per pound.

You're welcome,

Paul

Trigger,
I just got off the phone with BACO, 25 lbs 3F Old E $490 delivered to my door, that's $19.60/lb
Order it by the case lot, by doing this I believe that you'll enjoy your shooting much more for the simple fact you won't constantly be "seeking" a new load all the time.

Order 25 lbs, shoot the hell out of it, enjoy
Don't let anybody ch$t you, Old E shoots just fine

If not, they sell Swiss

Well Lumpy,

I guess the obvious answer is 'why not?' Are you suggesting that based on your testing it won't shoot as well as 2F? If you are then you would have to explain that to Savannah, Brian's daughter, who I watched shoot a 34/40 out to 875 yards last summer. Came in FIRST she did, left all the boys in her dust. I believe the load was 75 gr. in a 45-70. With the smaller granulation you can get a little more in. I believe Brian uses a 20 ton hydraulic press to compress his loads.

I know you were at the 'Q' once way back in time, when are you going to come play with us again?

Kindest regards (who says that?),

Paul

Do you know what bullet was used in that load? Only a 20T press-
Would love to return to the 'Q'.
I run the E 2F, in my .45-70 and .45-90 and my FPS are about the same from when I ran Goex 3F.
