factory crimp die

Post by kenny s »

I'm shooting a new Shiloh 40 70 SS and getting under 2 inch groups at 100, not too bad for my older eyes.
that's the longest range I have out here.

load
CCI reg primers, 64 OE 1 1/2 with slight compression.
420 grain custom mold PP bullet .392 , 1 in 20 cast. 8 pound paper.

I use a factory crimp (really just a squeeze die) to tighten around the hand seated PP bullet, which is loose in the case and needs to be
tightened. It holds the PP bullet tightly and slides into the chamber just close to hitting the lands.

question. how tight would you recommend the PP bullet be in the case?

Just curious
get the popcorn out REDNEK

How loose is the fit before using the die?
Have you tested your load without using the die?
Most folks just bump the round into a size die to close up the case mouth a bit.

The fired, unsized 40 70 SS case lets the PP bullet fit easily, but it will fall out, or move with out 'squeezing'

So? I'd try it like that and see... That's how I do it. Works for me...

I think the magic word here may be
consistent
as long as the patch stays on, and the space between the bullet and the wad/powder is ok, the round should be
accurate.
I, like all of us, get a flyer once in a while, and I'm looking for a solution to that too.

bad aim????? heck NO!

For me just squeezing the case mouth down enough to prevent the bullet from falling out of the case while I handling it on the firing line has worked well and I believe it improves the accuracy. I use either a Lee Factory Crimp die (.45-90 & .45-70) or a tapered neck sizing die (.40-65) and both work.

You don't want to size so much that you are marking the paper or lead under it. That I believe is a bad thing. YMMV

i bought a lyman taper crimp die that won't let the bullet fit in.
even a pp bore diameter bullet won't fit. :?:
a nd it won't crimp enough to grip a greaser :!:
top quality product, right up there with a lyman bore scope that self destructed, and you can barely see anything on the screen.
what would be a good taper crimp die brand?
keep safe,
bruce.

Have you tried a neck only, size die?

gary,
it is easier to get a pp bullet in a slightly loose fit case, and then slightly size the case onto it.
i thought a taper crimper might be the easiest way to adjust for a slight neck tension.
however the seated bullet must fit up through the die to do this.
people do this, but obviously not with deficient equipment like i bought.
keep safe,
bruce.

I mean to 'bump' the loaded round into the neck size die so the case mouth just 'hugs' the bullet.
I have a older Redding .45-70 neck size die, and you can do this with bullet in place.

Redding profile crimp die works great.

Bruce, my Lyman die says, Short Taper Crimp. Sounds like you need a long taper crimp die, do they make one? My OAL is 3.296 with a money bullet and the Lyman Short Taper Crimp works without any trouble with a 45-70.

I use the Lyman taper crimp die to just barely hold the bullet in and not pull out. Bullet still spins in the case
