PP lube wad

Post by CaptnJack »

I am trying to get all my bullets in one basket for reloading my 45-110. I am looking at the lubed wad for PP. What kind of lube or concoction do you use? Or do you even use a lube wad? if so how thick do you keep it? Also, do you use a paper over the primer? See what happened when a person starts reading the book Loading and Shooting Paper Patch Bullets. Thanks.

I'm far from an expert but I use beeswax, olive oil and crisco for lube, I suspect the thickness depends on conditions. 1/8 th of an inch seems to be the norm.

Shooting grease groove bullets in a sharps is new technology and just a passing fad.

I like my cookie a little thicker and personally i feel the lube should kinda liquify a little when you push on it with your finger, what ever you use
As orville says 3/16 is a good depth.

A lube wad is not required for a PP bullet. If you are looking to use up space in the case [45-110] there are other options like cork wads.

Keep on hav'n fun!

I only use a lube wad for my hunting loads, in my 45-110's. None in my target loads.

I use a over primer wad in all my loads, and FG or 1.5 Olde Eynsford.

The lube wad loads are honest 2.5 MOA at 200 yards, they will fail you at 800-1000 yards, been down that road.

If you want match grade loads, in a Shiloh 45-110. You can check out my posts.

the giveaway might be in sharps loading recommendations.
for ammo not used in the long range rifle, and when using a grease wad, they made no mention of putting a wad between the grease wad and the bullet.
this will curtail accuracy.
they suggested it would be sufficient for hunting.
on the other hand i have seen some seriously good targets shot by kurt using grease wads and no wiping, just shooting dirty.
wonder how those lods would have gone at long range?
keep safe,
bruce.

Bruce there is a place for shooting dirty and lube or no lube. I use all three.
I get along fine shooting dirty on our local range that is 200 yards or less just shooting swingers or bowling pins. I have shot up a 100 round box of rounds loaded with a lube wad and never using a rod or blow tube. These are fine loads for just letting others shoot my rifle and hunting. They will stay on a 200 yard swinger that is 8X10" that is set up there.
Just in the last couple years I been taking Brent's lead omitting the lube wad and I get fine accuracy but there is the occasional shot that goes out into never land so I don't have the confidence yet loading with out a lube wad. Using a lube wad I will hold my own in a match out to the 1K pit or iron critters.

I have shot a fair bit with lube wads in my .45-110's. I got much better accuracy than most people on the internet would suggest is likely, at least with my C. Sharps .45-110. But there were sometimes unexplained flyers. Sort of the opposite of what Kurt experiences, but maybe we are doing things differently. I don't really use lube wads anymore.

For those of you who were reading this site several years ago, Rick Mulhern used to post a lot of nice 1000 yard groups with his .45-110 using thick lube wads.

I for go the lube wad in favor of the dry lubed felt wad, and jojoba oil wiped on the exposed patch. No worries about the lube migrating, and with the right bullet allows for shooting dirty or wiping between shots, altho wiping between shots gives the better accuracy at distances beyond 600.

Chris a few years ago I was shooting with Brent at Lodi and Brent had a extra mould like he uses so I bought it and I asked Brent his load and wad stack he uses so I loaded the .45-70 the way he does and the accuracy was good, very good but a unexplained head scratcher showed up. Well when the snow fell  :D I looked to find out what is going on using his no lube loads in my rifle and I found several occasional gas cuts, not many but enough that put the thought in my mind this is what was going on. In my mind the extra thin lube wad seals or helps seal the gas cuts back.
