Gave the blocks a thorough cleaning, and I am going to try a different set of handles, so I will pour some lead this evening after I get home from work. This could accelerate my experimenting with the paper jacket.

Bullet is sized in a push through die, so nose is not touched. Lyman Techs back with me, nose is supposed to be .452, so I will be saving for a new mold.

While reading the posts about this round being too big to chamber I had to perform the smell test and something doesn't seem right. While I don't shoot this round I know it was the go to starting bullet for Mike V when developing loads for his .45-70, at least that's what he wrote. Not one time did he say that the nose was .452 and wouldn't chamber in his Shiloh. Maybe he could chime in on his experience loading this bullet. What I have heard is that this is an excellent Govt. style bullet that carries lots of lube especially shooting a 34" brrel.

Tell Lyman the bore is .450 dia. and the nose is larger than the bore............
The nose SB .449 max.
Call them! Ask for a QC mgr in the mould section.

Save your self time and grief. Call up Steve Brooks and have him help you pick a bullet mould or look at what BACo. has to offer in .458 and order a quality mould. Why spend nearly $4000.00 on a rifle and use a poor quality mould to cast your bullets. Shiloh's barrels are second to none. Use a bullet that can get you the best accuracy. I know that custom moulds cost more, but you are already out nearly $90.00 and don't have a usable bullet.

All I can say is CALL BROOKS! I really had trouble believing that Lyman said that their specification for the nose diameter on the Govt. bullet is .452, so I just called them. The lady supposedly pulled up their specification drawings and said that it listed the nose diameter at .450, PLUS OR MINUS .OO2. I tried to tell her that wouldn't work, but she didn't want to hear it. Something has changed at Lyman, big time, and it ain't good.

FWIW, in Spence Wolf's book, his arsenal drawing lists the nose diameter of the Govt. bullet at .442-447. Lyman has a real train wreck on their hands. Shoot straight, rdnck.

I believe that I will go with the Brooks, likely a nose pour paper patch bullet, but it is going to have to wait until I can afford it. Folks I really appreciate all of the inputs!

I would suggest a GG, base-pour bullet to start, like a 540gn Creedmoor Brooks makes.
Then, when you have all your ducks in a row. Jump to PP.
