Getting things from MSC you might get several shipments from different locations of the same product. I ordered 8 four foot rods in white and black, four each, in 3/8 and 7/16 and several sheets of 1/16" HDPE and also 1/16" sheets of LDPE for wads. I like the HD better because it seems to hold the gas back better when just one wad is used. But you might get a shipment from 3-4 different States of the same idem and you might find one 4 foot rod in a 6 foot round hard tube and 2 12X24" plastic sheets in a box 14X 26" but the shipping charges are around $12. and change for all but the UPS driver will come 3-4 days in a row. When I order rods delrin or brass I get a bunch because I ask different guys I shoot with that I will place a order and get extra for them this saves the extra shipping costs because shipping is about the same for 2 as 12.
But I have yet to get something I had to return because I didn't like it.

Chris, the fiberglass rods are very thin, and do not touch the bore or chamber. with a wet rag, they perfectly fit the bore from the breach.
I don't like steel rods, covered or not. the covering always wears thin, and they CAN damage the muzzle especially, even with the brass muzzle funnel on it. And steel rods do not bend over the tang sight.
I do keep a steel rod in the car just in case I run into trouble at the range. so far, so good though.
Sometimes, the mfg. sells us a bill of goods to get us to spend $50 on a rod. I've done it too. But the old guys got tight groups at 900 yds and those guns are still in good condition...and they used wood. If A rod is clean, it will not damage the bore.

Most of us probably started out BP shooting with muzzle loaders. When you get a tight ball, you always remember what will happen to your hand if your wood loading rod breaks. When fiberglass loading rods came on the market, they seemed like a very VERY good idea. They were not on the market very long before It was discovered how abrasive fiber glass is. A barrel can be quickly ruined even using a muzzle guide. With the patch keeping the end of the rod off the barrel and a guide at the breach or muzzle keeping the rod off the barrel, the flexing of the rod can damage the rifling inside the barrel. Even if the rod is clean, the fiberglass will cut the steel.

It is easy to keep a Delrin rod clean and it doesn't seem to damage the rifling if it does touch. You can still buy fiberglass rods and they have a smooth finish, but a Delrin rod is the same cost and is more flexible and safer. A fiberglass rod made to hold a drive way reflector likely does not have a finish on it designed to protect a rifle bore. Personally I prefer to not risk damaging my rifles.

There is a guy on ASSRA forum that is selling 4 foot delrin wiping rods, drilled and tapped for 8-32 jags and brushes, with bore guide for
$20 postpaid in USA” .

I still have an older white delrin(?) rod I bought @ the Quigley in 2000. It has such a bow in it, I can clean a bore around the corner in the next bay :D !

ok. I'm alway open to advice. I'll ditch the fiberglass rods and try a delrin instead.

for me, other than a delrin rod, a Tipton Graphite composite cleaning rod
is great for cleaning, could be used for wiping and is NOT abrasive. Graphite is a lubricant.
Tipton rod even works for pounding a tight turpentine patch thru bore for lead removal
But the Tipton does not beat the flexible delrin rods( No handle needed nor wanted) for on the line wiping.

I bought the 1/4 inch delrin rod for my 40 70 ss. the 1/4 fiberglass worked so I though that size would be fine. NOPE. it bends too much pushing a patch from the breach. It did thread nicely and fits the .22 head put at the end of the rod.
I've ordered 2 more. 3/8 and 5/16. I'll glue wooden heads on (this works well) and then give them a try.
I think the larger size will allow a good fit in the .40 and not bend so much with a tight cleaning patch.

Is someone taking over Steve Rhodes' delrin rod sales? Those are fine rods, and he had other items.

3/8 devlin white rod. cheap and right size for the 40 70 SS
I threaded the end, put in a .22 jag, put a wood 'drawer pull' handle on the other end. (Lowes), cut to fit and I have a nice range rod.
I turned the end down about 3 inches to let the patch slide through, and yet the rest of the rod is strong and doesn't seem to bend.
The 5/16 fits the bore, and is thicker but the patch is too tight. I could, and may turn the end like the other, and use it for a backup.
In any case , cheap and easy...
