I believe most wiping rods are made of Delrin. Acetal plastic is the generic name.

I just had them send me eight four foot 7/16 and 3/8 for the .45 and .40 calibers Nylon and black acetal. Both acetal and the nylon drill and tap good for jags. I like the black acetal better they hold their shape better then the nylon over time.
I also got a few sheets 12X24 1/16" HDPE and punched out some wads for the .45 and .40. I got over 1300 .40 caliber wads from one sheet. Good stuff.

go to the hardware store, buy a couple of fiberglass driveway reflectors...cut off the reflector and glue a wooden handle on it. point the working end, and you have a great cleaning rod. works perfectly for my 40 70 SS, and it BENDS over the tang sight making it easy at the range to run a wet and then dry patch through. No it doesn't hit the chamber....to wear factor.

the Patch....go to the fabric store, buy a couple of yards of soft fabric. pull long strings about 2 inches wide, then cut them double with a razor knife. Put a bunch in a freezer bag, wet them good and seal. bring to range...
hundreds of patches for about $5.

the rods and patches all told cost about $12.....I made a second rod for the bench, sand keep one in the range bag.

I have a few metal/coated rods, but like these for their ease of use. I still clean from the muzzle with the metal coated rod with the brass muzzle protector at the bench though...

Last thing I would use is fiberglass. Fiberglass is very abrasive.

A few years back I made up a couple of wiping rods. I ordered 5/16 delrin rods, 5' long from OnlineMetals.com. I get a lot of my material from them. Down side is I think the shipping at the time was as much if not more than the cost of the material. I cut the rods to about 48" and used the left over to make a chamber wipe rod. I set them up and threaded the end 1/4-20 and fitted a brass tip to the rod, then drilled and taped that to screw in a jag or brush. Delrin is a lot nicer to work with than Nylon is. Even without a handle these rods are nice and easy to work with. The small size lets me use them in a 38 and they also work just as well in the larger bores. You can also use what ever size you would like if you want a bit stiffer rod that more closely matches your bore size. The delrin is available in both black and white.
