Group variation

Post by ChrisF »

All things being the same i.e.: bullet compression wads brass has anyone noticed variation in groups between different powder lots?

Yep... but rarely with Swiss. IMOP.

I notice group variation day to day with the same lot of powder in ammunition otherwise loaded the same.

Things other than rifle condition and ammunition affect group variation.

I have found my loads can change as much as a couple of grains one way or the other when changing powder lots. Small amount of testing and I'm back on. Might have to add or decrease compression a little bit. Swiss usually doesn't take much to get it going again if anything at all.
Normal isn't coming back, but Jesus is.

Chris,

When changing lots of powder, I start with the same volume as the old lot. If it doesn't shoot the usual tight groups (when I'm shooting well and under good conditions), I make small adjustments to the powder volume--on the order of a grain or so, and generally find a load that gives similar good accuracy with only 1-2 tries.

As an example, my last lot was a bit less dense (lighter weight for the same volume), and I added ~1 grain, working by volume. I have a brand new lot and will go through the same process with it. If it is more dense, I will probably decrease the volume slightly if the initial tests aren't to my satisfaction.
