Basic 45 Brass.

Post by CaptnJack »

Howdy, I have 200 rounds of basic 45 brass. 100 of Bertram and 100 of Norma 3 1/4" long. I need to cut them down for the 45-110, 2 7/8". What would be the best way to cut them down at first to get close. I do have a Hornady case trimmer to get to the final size when needed.

Get a lee case trimmer for the 45-70 and chuck it up in your drill press. Set the stop on the press to get the length to just a hair long, then finish up in your Hornady trimmer, chamfer the case mouths.
A bit of good cutting oil on the lee trimmer helps the process.

Without a lathe I'd say the drill press and Lee trimmer sounds like the go. I've used a small pipe cutter but it was fiddly and I only had to do a handful of cases. You've probably already done your homework but keep an eye on brass thickness as you take 3/8" inch off the basic cases. The neck thickness may well jump a few thou. Not a problem for pp but it may run your gg loads pretty tight. Just keep an eye on it. Another vote here for the Forster trimmer :)

file trim die and a hacksaw followed by a file.
adjust the die to cut a little longer than you think, as cases can shorten when fireformed (which can take more than 1 shot).
shortened cases can benefit from annealing, as you are cutting off the correctly annealed neck portion of the original.
keep safe,

Here is a little jewel I use for trimming cases. https://www.harborfreight.com/2-in-mini ... off-saw-62
I cut a troth on a block of oak that fits the case and something for the rim to catch so I get a exact cut in front of the rim for a proper chamber depth.
This little saw turns at 10.5 K very fast and it makes a very clean cut. I cut the cases .010" longer then I need and do the final trim in the Wilson trimmer.
You can go through a bunch of cases in a very short time. You can see the clean cut this saw makes.

I use a dremel in a drill stand, with a snood to allow securely holding the case while cutting it with a cutting disk. But the little chop saw is a more elegant solution...
