relieving wood forearm

Post by kenny s »

a question. I have a 40 70 Shiloh and had the custom wood bedded. all good.
the forearm is tight to the action and I'd like to relieve it a little from the action.
I know that the width of a business card is normal, and I've done this before.
However. NEW gun., NICE gun. and before I mess it up.

any ideas on how to do it? should I do it?
getting 3 inch at 100 now, and some flyers. load is good... some 1 1/2 inch groups.

what think? Ken

kenny s,
Just shoot another 500-600 rounds through that rifle and you will be surprised how the flyers go away.

Keep on hav'n fun!

So this is an accurizing trick? To keep the forearm off the receiver?

yes. experts all agree it should be done. in modern guns, 'free floating a barrel is the best. Can't do it to the Sharps though.
so....relieve the end of the forearm to a $1 bill or a little more will help the hot barrel stabilize shot to shot.

so it goes.....
I shoot in the heat of Florida. which is Seminole for ' Its TOO Damn hot outside!

Barrel heat on my standard 40 70 SS is something to watch.
I even rigged up a spray bottle and plastic tube to run water through it once in a while.
Buff hunter used to piss in there but I'm afraid I'll get stuck!
but I digress
