45-110 Norma Basic Brass Resizing PROBLEM

Post by Cm1green »

Hello folks

Having an issue with resizing the Norma Basic Brass in my Lyman 45-110 full length resizing die. Hoping someone has some good info because at $2.00 a case can’t afford to screw up many! Info on cases is as follows.

1. I trimmed cases down to 2.875 length
2. Cases have been anealed
3. Dies have been thuroughly cleaned of all preservatives
4. Dies are properly adjusted and tight in press.

What is happening is about 3/4” down from case mouth the case is buckling length wise in about 6 to 8 places all the way around the case and buckling looks as throw some one dimpled the case in different spots. The dimples are in about a 1/2” area all the way around the case.

The dimples are probably from to much lube on the front end of the case.

Sometimes too much spray case lube can cause dimpled spots on brass during case sizing. I use a very small amount of Imperial die sizing wax to lubricate cases before sizing.

Imperial sizing wax is the only way to go. A little dab
will do you. No lube dents unless you get completely carried away :)

Thanks Gents

I tried a couple with one shot spray dry lube and the 3rd one had very slide dimples so going to clean due again real good and go it’s a dry lube. This is not an easy process as I can only resize about 3/4” at a time so takes about 5 to 6 times in and out of press to resize 1 case! I feel that I am not quite getting things right as I reload several smokeless powder calibers and have been reloading for quite some time now around 5 years. This is my first time to work with such a long straitwall case. This is also my first set of Lyman dies to ever work with. Read all instructions and have been doing nothing but reading and watching what ever videos I can watch to load these large cases for black powder shooting! I know once these are Fire formed to my Chamber it won’t be like what I am doing now but would think this should be a bit easier than what I am going thru. I feel a bit stupid right now! Any help is respectfully used and any is a great help to me as I am a true Novice to these weapons! I am still waiting on my rifle just trying to have all pretty much ready for when I do finally receive it. Thanks again gents!

When you do get a case sized, is it the correct size??

If it is, I would check interior polish of the die.

Call Lyman.

I size 45-2.6 cases in one pass without problems. Maybe it is your die. Imperial definitely is your friend. A little on your finger is all it takes.

@ Gussy yes when it is one it is the right size. I am going to order some imperial wax tomarrow and wait to do the rest of my cases so I can use it!

I just read a thread on the cat boolit site where a fellow was having a similar problem. He succeeded by first running the case up into a 45-70 sizing die and then subsequently running them up into a 45-2 7/8 sizing die. Kind of a two stage sizing operation. It might help.

I use a lube pad, but use hoppys gun oil on it and never get the "lube dents" anymore.

The best and cheapest case lube I have ever tried was sitting on my bench. I had been using spray lubes in the past but one day I ran out right before I was loading some .50 2 1/2 rounds. I looked over and saw my tub of DGL sitting there...so I ran my finger over the top and spread it on the case and tried running it through my full length sizer, I've never resized a large case that easy before, smooth as glass and have been using ever since. And as a bonus, I don't have to buy case lube any more. Just remember to wipe the cases good before shooting.

The spray lube Sagebrush sells is the best.
Spray the cases, and lightly roll 1 time on a terry cloth towel.
FWIW: I stopped using Lyman dies because of their 'soft' steel.
They use a leaded steel, and would scratch way to easily.

Well been using the one shot spray lube since lastnight after cleaning die again real good to get excess lube ou of die. I did what Mr. Johnson said about running up into a 45-70 die first to give a try. What an amazing difference and no dimpling on brand new brass. Thanks all for the Great tips in the responses I really do appriciate all the wonderful advice! Still learning, if I learn something new each day by the time I pass I will be well edumacated! I had not been on here in almost a year due to being diagnosed and going thru a Cancer battle so now after recovering from last treatment in July of last year I am able to get back to my reloading and learning more about this new firearm and the loading of it! Thanks again all enjoy your day I am reading more and having Coffee as a snow storm moves thru town!
