I've been using OE 1 1/2 in my Shiloh 40 70 SS and while it works well, it's dirty.

any thoughts on another brand,,,and who about 2F in the 40 70?

I switched from Swiss to OE, in my 40-70SS, a few years back because of the positive reviews and the lower. Although cleanliness is subjective, I personally think the OE is cleaner than the Swiss. However, I don't find either powder harder, than the other, to clean between shots. I use two wet patches.

We were all waiting for someone to say Swiss 1.5, thought Brent would be first. Probably most people's first choice but some like 2F. I've only tried OE in one gun 40-65 with no compression and it was very accurate. Haven't had time to test it since I've switched to PP.

1.5 or 2 f Swiss would be what I would grab. I'd start with 1.5 and probably finish there.

I'm busy tonight trying to solve two highwall trigger problems by email and contemplating the 58 bullets I shot into a snowbank today between rainstorms.

While doing the shooting I BROKE 3 bore gophers. Snapped and not do to being treated roughly. I guess the bronze corrodes eventually too. I'm going to have to build another set for this year. Good thing to find out now though.

I will put my finding in this.
I use 1.5, 2 and 3F swiss and OE now that KIK is gone. I liked that powder.
The 3F mostly for pan powder but a couple rifles, the .44 and .40 does well with the 3F both with swiss and OE.
My .45-90 favors the 2F OE over Swiss with all bullets I have for the .45 Calibers and the .44's. I found treating the OE and Swiss with the same compression and both powders will tolerate heavy compression as well as light or none. It's a toss up for me with both brands as far as accuracy.
Fouling, both powder will leave a dark bore. Let's face it, it's black powder. But, the way I test my powder to see what is easier to control I use a blow tube and one long slow blow and push a dry patch through the Swiss will push dry dust out ahead of the patch and the OE will have the fouling stuck on the end of the patch a little moist.
This is a none issue when one wipes between shots but it is when a blow tube is used.

My 40-70 shows no difference in fouling between Swiss and OE 1 1/2, it does show a definite preference for OE when it comes to accuracy.

groups are 'sometimes' under 1 1/2 inches, and sometimes I just throw the targets away so no one sees them! HA

I think the accuracy problem is in my 73 yr. old eyes.

Wife & I both use 40/70 for mid-range---it's great cartridge! Both rifles prefer OE 2f and will group 3/4 min with BA 420 gr money bullet. I have never considered OE as dirty----it's fouling is much softer than Swiss. Most people have found OE needs at least .250" compression---unlike Swiss which you can just set bullet on top of. I have used powders other than Swiss ( KIK & OE) that make a 1 1/2 size but it their grain size is not same as Swiss. In both I find you need their 2 F to match Swiss 1 1/2.

I have never tried 3F in the 40/70. I HAVE used 1 F with surprising results ! Plain old 1F GOEX to top of case ( 74 gr ) compressed .340" with the $ bullet put 10 shot into .650" hole @ 100 yd. The most accurate BP load I ever tried. My wife has records @ 200 & 300 using it. Her 45/70 has fired similar groups using 3F Swiss & 520 govt bullet. I have a range on my property & experiment a LOT. You have to experiment with each granulation & brand to find right combination. Using a chronograph also helps.

OE 2F is my choice, of all powders I have tried to date in our Shiloh's.

Like the time I tried to grow a $250 tomato.

loam, roto tiller, plants, fertilizer, water, and I finally succeed. ONE big tomato, cost $250.

(at the same time all my neighbors were trying to give away all the tomatoes they grew for free....)
