to size or not

Post by kenny s »

OK old topic but ...
in my 40 70 SS Shiloh.....I started with the new BA two diameter 400 grain mold.
I sized some in my lube sizer at .408. the bullet is 408 as cast. SPG lubed.

and some I did not run in the sizing die,,,but dipped them by hand.

The dipped bullets are very accurate.. 2 1/2 inch 10 shot group at 100 yards all round and centered.
The sized, or rather run through the die to lube, are not as accurate.

what are the latest thoughts? hand dip or run through a sizing die?

(Then of course I had three shots of the PP 415 grain and just wanted to use them up...three in one inch at 100.)
#$%^&@*!!

thanks..Ken

Try every way you can think of, and listen to the target.

right Gary, the target was a 10 shot group in 2 1/2 inches at 100, and 9 out of 10 were in 1 1/2 inches , round and centered.

now...how about the 100 pre cast, and pre lubed that I have already done????? back into the melting pot I guess....

Don't decide because of just one group.

true Lumpy, but it was 10 shots and it all worked,
good enough to try more of the same load and cast/lube combo.

all fun anyway...Ken

What are your way of testing a specific load, before keeping or dropping ?

Number of shots, number of times, number of different days, flyers ??, etc...

shoot, repeat, shoot, repeat and on and on.
when I see something, like a certain PP paper, I follow the trail. If it dead ends , so be it.

because it's no problem to dip lube rather than size lube the new BA Greaser mold. , I'll go that route for a bit.
If it does not repeat...I've lost nothing..just the test.

I weight all the bullets withing a grain, 1 in 16 lead, weigh the charges exactly, 63 2f in this case two foot drop tube slowly poured,
ploy wad, seated with a micrometer seating die exactly the same, two paper wads under the bullet, and seat the bullet
by hand with a very slight, by feel, factory crimp to just hold it in place. Loads just short of the rifling without touching it.

procedures are good....
The PP 415 with 67 grains shoots to 1 1/2 inches. I'm just trying the greaser now.
I wipe between shots, but I'd like to try the blow tube in 5 shot strings next, again...'just to see'

good conversation about lubing . SPG high heat by the way....double boiled and cut out when dry with a shell and push rod prepared for this.

Yup-If it looks good at 300yds-Then move out to 500-600 yds.
Also, shoot in cross-wind, and watch for crazy flyers.
Serious groups for me, are 10 shots.

And a game of consistency. Consistency is sooooo important.

Was working up a long range load for a 44-90 Remington Straight with a Dan T chamber and a Dan T designed Paul Jones Money Bullet for that chamber and rifle. Using 1 F Swiss, one relay it would shoot lights out, next relay it was hard to keep on paper. Never did figure out the problem. Shoots 1.5, 2 and 3 F Swiss just fine.

BTW, I use a SAECO Lube Sizer for applying lube to all of my match bullets.

Look forward to seeing Kurt, Lumpy, Tom Klinger, George Babits and Bruce M on the firing line March 2020 in Phoenix.

but zack,
I don't lube or size my bullets.
just looking at the name list raises the question as to whether you want to form a veterans team.

No Bruce, no sirree Bob

I do have an ulterior motive though to which I freely admit in spite of a personal resistance to pointing out the obvious.

The named nimrods, in my opinion, would not only benefit from attending the Triple Crown of Black Powder Rifle Shooting experientially they would have a jolly good time in doing so. After all isn't that why we shoot these old smoke poles but for the love of the sport and the period rifles?

Imagine, a group of people sponsoring the largest black powder rifle match on the planet out of the love of the sport and the history of the sport in America simply for the enjoyment of those that shoot in the sport competitively? Wrap your head around that reality and come to Phoenix March 2020 and be part of the Triple Crown of Black Powder Rifle Shooting to see what it means. :D

The logistics can be worked out. It could be the transcendental experience of a lifetime.
