King Poly Wads

Post by Coltsmoke »

If any one has the King Poly Wads sold by Shiloh, can you give me the dia. of their .45 and .40 poly wads that are .030 thick. Thanks in advance for any help.

Coltsmoke, Your message provokes me to tell folks about the new wads I just got.

I had been using King wads from BACO but King retired and BACO is selling John Walter's poly wads. Those are just a little bit bigger. enough that they are much harder to get in the case - especially if you are shooting a super tight chamber dedicated to bore diameter bullets. I discussed this with John and he has made new punches for his poly wads that will make slightly smaller wads. He sent me quite a few thousand of them just a few days ago. I haven't actually loaded any of them yet, but I'm confident that they are going to be the cat's meow for us dedicated skinny bullet shooters.

brent,
you raise a good point there.
at one time I was sizing my cases down in a file trim die, as you could then seat a bore diameter bullet slip fit.
using groove diameter plastic wads presented a problem in that the wads bulged up.
using neck tension held the bullets in enough to keep the wads flat.
veg wads could be seated in a way that they stayed flat, so I tended to use them for that application.
right sized wads would have made life simpler.

Over the last couple of years I've been using one of the BACO press mounted wad cutters. They cut a slightly smaller diameter wad than the precut ones that BACO sells. This makes them a little better for bore diameter PP bullets IMO.

Oh, and Coltsmoke, I've never tried the 0.030" wads in .45 cal, but the last 0.060" ones I ordered were about 0.463" in diameter.

I have Cornell cutters that do 0.450", 0.454", and 0.460". They do a better job on cutting than whatever is being used to make the precut wads. The precut ones often have plastic "fur" while the Cornell cutters make for clean edges.

OK, this is interesting.
the last batch of BACO, .060 measure .0585
The new batch of Shiloh that I received two days ago measure .063.

did a few and they all measure that.
I have not tried loading the Shiloh, but I think they will be tight to push in the case.
I do not size the 40 70 SS cases, but slightly expand to slip fit the BACO FF bullet, reduce front bands.
Then slightly fac. crimp to hold in place.

If I had known, I would have ordered BACO instead

NOW, I have a change in loads to contend with. did NOT plan on that.
HEY Shiloh, you should have let us know!

Tight chambers can be a problem using .060" polly wads that I don't find using fiber wads. Some of my chambers like this .40-65 just except a patched bullet in a unsized fired case. The .060" wads that are cut for a standard chamber will bulge the case necks enough that they won't chamber so I use .030", two if I feel I need .060 and I don't have the swelled case necks because the softer .030" wads will form a dome that does not cause a problem like a lesser diameter wad might do not filling the grooves and develop a possibility of gas passing by creating vertical issues. I don't think a bullet will obturate fast enough to hold the gas back.
But the tight chamber for a PP only bullet is worth the issues it might cause by the accuracy you see down range.

I just loaded a few of the NEW Shiloh Poly wads. and found them easier to put in the cases....???

The BA Poly wads, the older ones, measure .0585 thick and .4125 WIDE
The new Shiloh wads measure .0630 thick, but only .4080 WIDE. thicker but not as wide.

so while the poly BA are thinner than the Shiloh, they are WIDER and have to be pushed hard in my 40 70 cases.
While the Shiloh are a little thicker, they are a little less in width. and are easier to put in the case.

will it make a difference?? who knows, but easier to load is nice.

Here are some LDPE wad diameters that may be helpful to some of you, esp, if you are shooting chambers that are too skinny for groove diameter bullets.

A nominal 0.03" King wad sold by BACO - 0.0620" This is very hard to measure with any precision or accuracy, so I'm not real confident of that measurement.

A nominal 0.06" Walters wad sold by BACO - 0.4640"

a nominal 0.06" Walters wad just delivered directly from John - 0.4615" This wad is 0.061" thick by the way.

These wads are tough to measure, so, depending on how you do it, you may get different numbers. But they are comparable within the group that measured.

Do you have any dia. measurements on .40 wads or received any new ones from John?

Just received an order last week, did a quick measurement with my digital calipers, and got 0.4125 diameter, and .060 on thickness.
