38-55 Barrel Length

Post by SSShooter »

Am thinking of having a 38-55 built for BPCR and am wondering if 28" is enough barrel length to get a 'full-burn' with BP or should I stay with a 30" barrel. Am thinking of a #1 with a half-round standard weight barrel. And, no......... am not interested in a different cartridge.
Thanks.

Glenn mine is a CPA, not a Shiloh with a 28 inch barrel and works quite well with around 46 grains of Swiss 1 1/2, juice carton wad, and a 330 grain Lyman Postell.

Bought it used, so no choice in barrel length, if I was ordering one I would probably go with a 30 inch just because,no issues with burn in my 28 inch though.

Glenn,

I had a 38-55 built many years ago. Used a 30 inch and had no issues with accuracy or velocity. Dumped the barrel because ----------it's still a 38-55. That's my 45-70 High Wall now. I don't think you will have any issues with either length. Good luck.
