Brent, I am not complaining, I am only stating that target rifle is not any fun for me when it is blistering hot and I know more than a handful of other folks that feel the same way. June is not the hottest month, July is, especially late July. Last I heard Late July is the plan for the matches next year. More than likely I will not be there because I cannot and do not want to take off more than 4 or 5 days of work as it is during the busiest time of year for us.

The original question was

IF and that's a big word...IF a mid range BPTR NRA national championship were to immediately follow the BPCR NRA Silhouette National Championships at Raton New Mexico next year.. I wonder how many crossover ( for lack of a better descriptor) shooters would attend ?

Perhaps I just should have answered no, but I felt I needed to explain why in hopes that just maybe somebody would read it and try amend things so that I could go. I suspect what will happen is they will again schedule something like they did this year and then cancel for lack of attendance while blaming everyone for not supporting it. As always, I appreciate and respect your thoughts and ideas. They always bring about discussion and I have to admit often make me rethink things. At some point, however, you have to admit that you are the minority in your thinking.

Cody, I'm not in the minority - just the vocal minority. You might notice that attendance wasn't cutting it when it was pushed back into September. When it was well attended, it was in July.

As for which month is hottest, I took that from Jerry Vanwey. He lives in Raton and has for 15+yrs.

It's quibbling anyway about not much, but I am still astounded that so many people whine about it and then go to an even hotter match without a whimper. Meanwhile, while other groups of shooters are happy to shoot on that range at that time of year. Whatever. BPTR is a lot wimpier than I realized.

I think what would help the Nationals is setting a firm date every year like the growing Gong and the local matches have so the working shooters have time to schedule time off from work.
As far as hot weather. People will shoot that want to shoot. I don't think age has much to do with it, at least not for me. I'm 79 and I shoot when it's below zero or 90 plus with high humidity like today getting ready for Harris with a new rifle. !0 shots fired and the barrel was so hot I could not hold it.
I have stayed on the Raton range and shot on it in the winter and summer, there is no finer facility I have shot at that matches it and I would like to shoot the Nationals but I stayed away from the Nationals because all the bad reports and grumbling I read. I travel all over this country shooting their local matches and enjoy every minute but I won't go to a match where all the distraction I read others are posting......Kurt

Kurt, a single date for all eternity is not going to happen. NOt for BPCR, BPTR or any other sport at the Whit. Why don't people understand that? This is not your local gun club. It is the NRA's National Range. It works completely differently.

As for the "distractions" you read about here - it is all HERE. NOT THERE. People just love to drag the Nationals down for some reason.

Brent I understand that. But they can be scheduled at different time frames that are on the same weekends every year.

No, they cannot. That's the point.

I wanted to shoot BPTR while I was at Raton in 2020.....I think it will never happen now.

Jeanne and I talked for DAYS about BPTR and trying to find a way to get it tacked on to the Nationals and have ANOTHER National championship.

I posted this thread as Jeanne was texting Aaron Farmer...asst. Director of Competitions at the NRA..Jeanne requested being heard on why there should be another attempt at putting on a BPTR Nationals at Raton.

This is a BUSY place and plans for next year's match start a year in advance...and most don't realize that. I guess most think you can show up a week before the match, get permission and leter rip...things don't happen that way. You may be able to do that at some small place...but not at the Whittington center.

Aaron Farmer reads these posts and MY hope was if 50 or so shooters posted positive comments and an interest Jeanne would have " ammo" for her request to put on a BPTR National championship...it didn't happen.

Well over 400 views...three or so interested and one ( predictably) being negative and chanting anti NRA stuff.

I think that's proof enough for me .

To those of you that think putting on a match at the Whittington center is easy to run and schedule a year in advance, you have NO idea..NONE what it takes to put on a big match, how much it costs and the myriad of other details that must be taken care of.

I can tell you from experience it's a 24/7/365 uncompensated pursuit.

To all the bloviators ..I challenge YOU to put on a BPTR National championship at the Whittington center for 2020. NRA bashers...just call it whatever..and don't get the blessing from the NRA..the Whittington center will let you put on a big match ...after you jump through all the hoops of scheduling, insurance, costs to rent the range...etc, etc..But I'll let you discover all that . I want to shoot YOUR match at the Whittington center no matter who endorses it and irregardless of the schedule. I am retired and will make it..there.
There are those that talk, and those that act. Make a choice.
