Do any of you lubricate the patch after applying it?

I have tried it.
for target shooting it proved les accurate than just plain paper.
what was interesting however was that wiping was easier.
the small amount of lube left in the barrel by the paper must have been reacting with the fouling to make a little bit of soap.
the other issue is that patches can tend to unwind when lubed.
straight tallow did this less than any other lube.
using grease wads might be better for hunting.

I put cutting oil in water then wet roll. worked?

tried it a few times without success, but that's just me...seemed like it was for field use only still had to wipe....Ken

I have only tried it myself once, in the year I've been shooting my new Shiloh 45-70. I wiped bear oil on the paper patched bullets after loading them into the cases. I found absolutely no difference, good or bad, in the results on the targets. Paul Matthews speaks of it in his books, so I thought I'd ask for second plus opinions. I thank those who have replied.

I had one rifle that was shooting dirt diggers every so often and Dan T suggested lubing the paper just before firing .I did this and it stopped the low shot and shot so good that it was what got Dan interested in trying PP bullets ,If the bullets sat though the lube would glue the paper to the bullet so never did it ahead of time .

I lube the bore, not the patch. I wipe the bore between shots with (2) 3” cotton flannel patches that are dampened in a mixture of nine parts water, and one part water-soluble oil I get from Napa parts store. The rod I use is a black delrin rod. After this I again wipe the bore dry as before with (1) dry 3” cotton flannel patch. The very small amount of this nine-to-one mix of water and oil remains in the bore, and I believe that what is left there may very well lube the patched bullet a bit as it travels through the bore. And, this has proved to work very well in my 45-90 & 110.
I never like wiping my bore with just 100% water on a patch; I feel good about laving some rust-inhibitor in the bore.

Jojoba oil the exposed patch after the bullet is seated. It makes a difference for the better in some rifles, others it doesn't.
If you use the 1 oz bottle just put your finger on the mouth of the bottle and tip it up, that will give you about enough to wipe three or four rounds. Wipe the excess off with a tea towel. This pretty well follows the instructions from the 1875 Remington catalog.
What ever you do try needs to be something that won't compromise the paper.

Seriously, A Tea Towel ? Hmmmm , would such a towel require embroidery or better yet lace borders? If so which is recommended?
May we assume cotton as opposed to silk?

Coffee filters over the primer - tea towels to wipe the bullet. What next? Load them at Starbucks over a latte grande?

I shoot two different calibers with paper patch. Neither rifle will shoot to its best with out using an oil wiped patch prior to shooting. One is a 45-90 and the other is a 40-70 S.S. Tried Whale oil and JoJo Bean oil, JoJo is better. It does not take much! You do not want the oil to go past the first layer of paper. It will also shoot flatter.

OK MAH. how do you do the wiping with Jojo bean oil? by hand or with a cloth, and when..on loading or before?
