Tang sight placement?

I have a used Browning 1885 BPCR .45-70 I've had for a number of years and a used C. Sharps 1875 .40-60 I've had for 2 years, I think. The other day I was looking in my gun rack and noticed that the Browning had it's sight mounted on it's base in the forward position, closer to the hammer. I bought it that way. The 1875 has it's sight mounted on it's base reversed, closer to my eye. I bought a Hoke sight and base and mounted it that way. Which is proper? Does it make a difference or is it shooter's preference? Thank you, Tom

I think you are looking at the difference between a highwall and a sharps.
The tang sights are not reversible as far as I know.

Thanks for the reply, Mike. After reading it, I removed the staff on the Browning, reversed the base and reattached the staff. In this configuration, I was not able to comfortably grip the small of the stock and the staff wouldn't lay down enough to use my wiping rod. I find that the Sharps has a shorter length of comb than the Browning. I reconfigured the sight the way it was. Thanks again, Tom
