I have heard of it, can anybody explain it to me?

I have read about wad one being .030 fiber for compression, 2nd wad .060 for gas cutting and 3rd a cork wad to bring the bullet out further ie, PPing or reduced front driving bands.

Could just use a pieces of wax or newspaper for compression, but why would you NOT use a fiber or LDPE wad to compress with? Sounds like more making things difficult for the sake of more difficulty.

I only use multiple wads for one of two purposes: chewing up powder space because I am too much of a wimp to shoot full house loads (chickens only), or when I want to isolate a lube cookie from powder and paper patch in a hunting application.

I used 2 wads and a lube cookie with a PP load that Kirk gave me. But I remember reading about someone using them in target loads and no lube was involved.

I've found that two veggie wads work better than one poly and one veggie . .060 size in my 40 70 SS.
but who knows....Ken

In my .45-90, the only way I could get it to shoot well with OE 1.5 was to use Kenny's wad stack. With that wad stack it shoots about as well as Swiss 1.5 does with just a single LDPE.

Wads have a lot to do with accuracy, especially with a GG bullet more than a PP.
I have spent a lot of time in the winter when it's just not fit to go to the range or even get down to the pits with out snow shoes to post a target so I spend time studding bullets to find out why they do what they do. I don't assume the reason I look for it. :)
With GG a single wad is common unless a large capacity case is used several wads might be used to take up powder volume to reduce recoil and this is fine because there is a benefit doing this. But the material used makes quite a bit of difference sealing the gas.
I tested fiber gasket, LDPE, HDPE, felt, cork, card, paper and the very soft wads cut from one gallon ice cream buckets.
The recovered GG bullets below (top photo) had single .06 wads cut from fiber gasket material and were loaded in the .45-2.4 case. 4 out of 5 have mouse nibbles on the base, gas cuts, The 2 right and left had a single tablet backing wad .053" thick.
The center photo had a single .060 LDPE.
The lower photo are bullets shot with the new .40-65 with just a single .030 and .060 LDPE and you can see that some have gas cuts. I don't have the sorted photo of those I can put my hands on and I'm not sure if I ever recorded the results, because at that time I was more interested in bullet setback with the alloy I want to use with that caliber.
I like a single card cut from a OJ carton over the powder and either with a 1/8" lube wad or none plus a .040" plastic bucket wad. The resin used in ice cream buckets is very good and expands better than a LDPE.03" or .60" sealing off the gas that is very important keeping vertical to a minimum.

I think that one has to also consider chamber design as well when considering the type and number of wads to use. If the chamber is a tight one and, better yet, if it were designed to give the case an almost inside cylindrical neck all the way down to the base of the bullet, this would greatly help the wad in sealing gases behind the bullet. If on the other hand if the case should taper outward appreciably down where the wad sits then the sides of the wad may not be in good contact with the case-walls both before and upon powder ignition. This may then allow gases to get around the wad before the wad enters the bore and tries to seal here.

I think Kenny's article is what I was thinking of. Thank you Kenny!
