I don’t know how others do it but I set my Swiss measure by weight then use OE for the same volume and so far it seems to be a good comparison on the target. Usually my OE is bulkier than Swiss

I fell upon a great load with 1.5 OE, for my 38-55 and PP bullets by pouring the case full a few times to get an average weight.
Then I drop tubed and compressed 0.180" to suit my bullet/ wad stack combo. Low single digit SD's. Life is good.

I just received a case of 1Fg OE to try in my 45-70 & 45-100. I plan on using the same procedure.

Keep on hav'n fun!

Mike I find doing the ladder loads using 1.5. 2, and 3F OE in all the .40, .44 and .45 calibers the groups shrink with .120" to .210" I havent used it in the .50 yet.

Mike I don't know if you're going to like 1f in the 45-70 real well, but it the 100 it should shine. Seems like it likes around 1/4 inch of compression. It will foul pretty heavy if you don't get enough compression on it.

I just did some more load testing with OE 1.5 this morning and I think it looks quite promising. This is the first time using OE in this rifle, which is a heavy barreled, 34", Shiloh LRE in .45-90 with a 1:18 twist.

The target was ten shots prone at 200m. Other than one user induced flyer, they went into 3/4" of vertical. The horizontal component was partially due to the breeze, and partially due to me. I did not chronograph the load but will at some point if the load shoots well several times.

I started on a ladder test a month ago but I have been worked every day since then and have not even been home yet. I will get back to my house a day before my first match of the season. I will scramble to try to get some ammo loaded and continue testing at some matches this year

Chris, if that load is repeatable might be a good idea to see how close to 1300 fps it is and give it a go at 1,000

Definitely Zack. The only problem I face is that our range directors are debating whether to shut the place down for a while. Plenty of time for case prep and loading for layer I guess.

Chris, not that I didn't expect it but if they shut your range down it all but puts the lid on our summer. We have been using MEDIPAC for our travel insurance needs for years. Yesterday I received an email from them saying that COVID_19 would not be covered. Last night I re-worked our Schedule for an all Canadian summer with Kamloops being the high point. Then just now the US-Canada border is shut. Presently the Canadian dollar is in the toilet and it would cost about $1.42 Canabuck to the USD. We could pay it but we can't afford it if we let common sense rule. So there we are, just like a dead Atheist, all dressed up and no place to go. We can only hope that 'this too shall pass' quickly and by June things start to open up again. The eternal optimist.

I misspoke, right now it would cost me $1460 CAN to buy $1000 USD. Ouch! Doesn't matter anyhow as the border has been closed. I realize I'm being selfish and compared to the man who is laying in bed dying at this moment my problems are silly but at 78 you wonder how many more summers you might have. Damn

Yeah I know what you mean Paul. Even without this virus I was cancelling travel plans to matches as I have a Shiloh or maybe even two to pay for. With the Canadian peso in the toilet I'm going to have to cut some options to be able to afford them. I have had a bull barrel rifle on order for years that is only partially paid for and I have to decide whether to pass on it, or cut options and have it built as apparently they are going to get run this year. I really want to build it because I might not get another chance. I also have the 1877 that I won in Colorado at Robert's match and I have to pay for some extras on that too. I'll probably remove the fancier options on that one too if I get the letter for it this year.

But like you say, these are all pretty small potatoes. I worry the most about my mother who has some respiratory problems and won't do well if she gets sick. And all of my older black powder shooting friends. Nearly all of them are on the north side of 65 and it'd be harder for them to get sick.

Edit: Pauil the range that is talking about shutting down is the one I practice on, not Heffley Creek. I'll look into that one and see.

Chris, please keep us posted on Hefley Creek. Our oldest moved to Kelowna back in 2015 so it would give us two reasons to make the long drive. It looks like this is our year to do it as the border is closed. The Quigley will just have to go on without us, Gavin and Gary fighting over the International Champion trophy. I guess he gets to be the champ one more year by 'default'. I think they should keep those rowdy Aussies out all the time.  They're always in trouble with the police and everything.  I'll stop there or they'll be offering me a job at the Washington Post.

Paul I just opened a letter with the match invite in the mail this morning! :D

I just went to their web site and based on what I see on the Heffley Creek web site everything is happening like normal.

I might just have to practice in the basement depending on what my local club decides to do.

Paul, would sure miss you folks if you're not able to come south this summer. That being said there is a match just south of Plentywood the first part of July. Place to camp. Mile match, lever match and big guns on Sunday. I also have 2 ranges that we could throw something together and get a few shooters together for a fun weekend. And I'm at Froid so neither place would be to far for you to travel without breaking the bank. Be safe.
