Old eynsford shooters
How many OE shooters do we have in here? I tried some for a while and it shot ok. I went to Swiss and my scores improved. That case is now almost gone. I bought a pound of OE a couple months ago just to try. 1.5 specifically. I made a few different loads to try and much to my surprise the OE out shot my favorite Swiss load. I said I wouldn’t buy anymore but I am really thinking about getting a case of OE. What kind of compression is everyone Running? I was expecting to need to use heavy compression but my lowest compression shot the best so I will make a few more loads with less powder and see where that gets me.

OE is good stuff! Cheaper than Swiss and softer fouling too. I find that my rifles like about 1/8" compression. Not much but just enough to squeeze the fluff out of the powder column. I went as much as 1/4" and groups started opening up.

I bought some a few years ago and started playing with it in my 40-65. when I got to the point where the bullet touched the rifling with no compression, it shot really well. Then I got busy with other things and never got back to it.

Re: Old eynsford shooters
Brian,
The first BP I used was Swiss 1 1/2 (2009). Inspired mainly by Mike V’s book. Then I tried Swiss 2f. Next was KIK 1 1/2. But the 10 containers were equally split between 2 different lots. Before retiring in Jan. 2019, my wife let me buy 25 pounds of OE 1 1/2 and on that order I specified all should be the same lot number.
I am satisfied with the OE after shooting it over the past shooting season. Cost was something of an influence but when this 25-pounds is finally gone, the next batch will again be OE.
Compression can be described as minimal. Now that I've dipped my toes into the PP water, I suspect the compression is maybe 0.100” or less.

I'm also following the Old E discussion. Has any that have been shooting OE any experience with lot to lot differences? I've been having such poor experience with Swiss the last couple of years that I'm starting to look elsewhere.

Woody I been shooting the OE since it came out. Several cases a year along with KIK and Swiss. All three have shot as well as I can shoot and all three I kept supplied in my locker, but I used up the last can of swiss and I will not reorder it. It's not worth the extra $110. a case over the OE and with the OE pushing a patch through the bore I don't get the fouling dribble out ahead of the patch like I do using swiss and I don't see any change lot to lot shooting test loads when I get another case. I load OE like I do Swiss.

Re: Old eynsford shooters
Before our 200 yard postal match is over I am going to load up some loads with 10 shot strings this time and maybe submit one last target. I only did 5 shot strings because I didn’t want to load up a bunch of ammo and find out none of it worked but I think I may have a load beginning to develop so it warrants more testing. I will probably just bite the bullet anyways and get a case. Like I said earlier the OE did ok but it was 2F and I got the 2F when I very first started shooting paper patch in silhouette matches so maybe the 1.5 does better for me. The very best 10 shot 200 yard group I have ever shot was with a brooks creedmoore grease groove bullet with 67 grains of OE 1.5. The group was under 2”. The last 2 shots were an inch below the other 8 which were a ragged hole that was around an inch.

Re: Old eynsford shooters
Woody I have burned three different lots of OE 1.5. The first lot was the fastest. A fair bit faster than the Swiss 1.5 that I was shooting at the time. It worked similarly well in my .40-65 silhouette as Swiss 1.5 for shooting silhouettes.
Then I got a partial case which was very slow. Like as slow as Shuetzen FFg. I never got that stuff to shoot consistently well except in one PP rifle.
I did take a chance again and the latest lot seems pretty good. Haven't checked velocity on it yet though. It shows some promise with PP bullets, excellent core group always with one or two ugly flyers for some reason. I still like Swiss better for that rifle. In my .45-70 Long Range Express the new OE 1.5 shoots quite well using the BACO 458535M1 bullet with about 0.270" compression.
I still have more faith in Swiss, but then I haven't seen any of the newer Swiss lots up here in Canada yet.
Chris.

Re: Old eynsford shooters
Keep thinking we should do 2 5 shot averages for the postal for that very reason since a lot of our loads are test loads.

Re: Old eynsford shooters
why worry about two? Let's just call it a five shot group.

Run 'E' 2F in .45-70 & .45-90.
Meters great and burns kinda like Goex 3F for MV.
Really like the stuff

Re: Old eynsford shooters
The least number of shots for record in both silhouette and target is ten shots.
The postal match started with ten shots and seemed appropriate at the time. Still does.
Changing the number of shots to five seems less a test of rifle and load for the practical competitive use.
After all, the postal match is also competitive in nature and you already have a ten shot baseline.
JMHO
As for OE, would be helpful if lot numbers of substandard runs were posted and actual loading data shared.
For instance: 45-70, Remington Brass fireformed not sized, Saeco #745, 1-20 alloy, SPG lube, Rem 91/2 Large Rifle Primer, fifty thousandths compression, 60 grains OE 2F Lot XYZ32
This would make the information useful to other shooters.

Re: Old eynsford shooters
60 grains not enough powder, and that eddy biddy bit of compression not enough.
Haven't noticed any change in the stuff from when I got the first 5 lbs Jerry Dean shipped and the last cases I got from Bear River a year ago.

Re: Old eynsford shooters
Unless my next little test is a complete failure (which I highly doubt) I think I am just going to make the 3 hour drive to Indiana and grab a case. Nothing will tell me how good my rifles will like it better than using it for a season.
