Don,
Yes, I shoot two rifles in that caliber, an original Hepburn Creedmoor, and an original Ballard #7 long range.....

Tom, there's a fella here just got one about like the one you describe in your possession. Might be a good thing if you could expound a bit on how you get the rifle to shoot well.

Fine long range cartridge. Cannibalizes my black powder stash. No worse on alloy than any other .44.
This one is a Borchardt with 34", 18 twist Badger barrel.

Uses Starline 45 2.6 brass sized down and fireformed. Don't forget the fireformed part.

Reading back about the 44-100 RS and the 44-90 RS it 'appears' those two cartridges were the last iterations developed specifically for long range target shooting. Both shine at the longer distances.

RS=Remington Straight and apparently based on the 45 2-6 & 2.4 case, more or less.

Would be interested in the actual twist rates on original rifles existing today.

I wonder if there are any survivors of the small lot of 44 st rifles that Sharps built, mentioned in Seller's book.

Gentlemen,
My 44 2.6 Remington has a choke bore and gain twist original to the rifle,I'm not sure what the twist is. How ever, both my original Sharps Creedmoor and the Ballard #7 long range have 1 in 20 twist which was most common in the originals. In the Ballard I shoot a 530g bore dia.hollow base pp bullet. Which was original to the rifle. The case is the Ballard 2.810 everlasting. The bore is .442 and the bullet length is 1.450. I keep the load as close to original as I can, so I use 106gr Swiss 1f drop tubed, uncompressed, one thin card wad, one .125 hard card wad, and one 060 veggie wad. This load shoots 1350 fps. I have a 700yd practice range at my Brothers farm, and thet load does very well out to 700 even with the long bullet.
The Hepburn has a .448 bore and I shoot a 1.490 length bullet weighing .560gr. bore dia pp. This one uses 95gr. Swiss 1f drop tubed un compressed with a playing card on the powder and a .060 poly on top. Both rifles have the bullets seated at .100 in the case. and both are using 16to1 alloy.
The Ballard is my favorite....
Merry Christmas everyone!

nice!!!!!
The one I will be working with has an 18 twist. Not sure as to bullet weight but I would guess 1.45 for length??

Probably be helpful if we knew the particulars on the newly emerged 44-100 in question.

Barrel make, length, rate of twist. Action type, and such.

The 100 has a lot of horsepower potential. We chose to load it down with grease groove bullets for long range competition.

Certainly not purists, but, what purpose will the rifle be put to is the important question.

I dont have bore and groove yet but, will soon and will post. Anyways, 32in badger, 1-18 twist, hepburn ser#856, Mva sights, treebone wood. I will get pics of the bullet currently being used as well. Front sight is without level and will be upgrading that as well as rear with more windage. Image

it will be used for competitions (target...will not make weight for steel) and hunting so 2 bullets will be in order. would like to do a DDPP for it, for long range work.
