Nose bore rider bullet

I tried a Lyman 457125 and it shot well...when i could get it to chamber.
The bullets nose engaged the rifling that starts just in front of the case.
My other Lyman mold , 457132, seems to have a nose undersized.

No amount of Alloy experimenting would let the 457125 reliably chamber or the 457132's nose to be a snug fir.

I think if I use a harder alloy with the 457132, it will not deform in the barrel and get off track. I'm hoping.

glen,
here is where custom moulds might be about to enter your life.
if you want to run greasers, the first place to start is so that the bands slide with a little but not much friction in to a well fireformed case.
this will not only eliminate the need to size cases, but will also reduce groove diameter bumpup requirement to an absolute minimum.
a good thing.
the second place is to be able to cast your bore riding noses to about 1/2 thou under bore diameter.
once you have bullets that fit as cast, life becomes good.
then all you have to do is experiment with alloy to minimize leading caused by bore riding noses bumping into the rifling.

Glen, the Lyman postell was designed with an undersized nose, that doesn't mean it won't shoot. As to your 457125, check your mould block faces for lead, that might increase diameter a smidgen.
In actual fact, you don't need a borerider for best accuracy.

Lyman does have problems with quality control on many of their molds. My Postell mold is a bit off on casting a round bullet but when run through a lube sizer is trues up and shoots well. My 457125 has a oversize nose and can be corrected by running the nose thru a carbide 44 mag sizer. Unsized it shot well in a Springfield "trapdoor" I finally ordered some bullets cast from a Saeco mold and they fit nicely. Finally ordered a BACO RN 500 grain mold and it is a perfect fit for my Shiloh and C. Sharps rifles. I have not ordered a Lyman mold in many years but use one or two infrequently. Buy a mold from a quality maker and you will be very happy with the quality of the cast bullets. I shoot bullets as cast and pan lubed and accuracy is excellent. The cost is higher but the bullets cast are much better.

Thanks gentlemen.
Eric...I was racking my brain trying to find a solution like that. thanks for the tip.

I should have included this information. When pushed through the 44 mag die the nose measures .448 ahead of the driving band and does work well but is a bit of a pain doing many bullets. The .458 BACO has a nose just right and allows for dirty bore shooting.

Eric
Which bullet from BACO are you referring to?

eric,
is glen's bore the same as yours?
it pays to get measurements of bore and fireformed case internal diameter and order the correct mould.
much cheaper in the long run, because this is what will happen in the end.
