Seeing this has inspired me to work on my idea of a pre-expanded bullet for hunting. By not having to expand, it could be fired from a low velocity cartridge and the hardness of the lead wouldn't matter. I'm making a special reamer for the mushroom shaped chamber.

So Coltsmoke, did you come up with that design to counteract "rotational decay"???

Oh, so you picked up on that I see, that was my inspiration to start this project. Griff will that be fired out of a rifled barrel or a smooth bore?

Re. Griff's pre-expanded bullet:
Been there, done that.
I always told the guys in Deer Camp that I hunt with my 45-70 M'86/Cast 385 gr FN bullet, and don't need
those new fangled expanding bullets like they need in their small bore 30-06's etc.

LOL.....LOL...I can see you guys are suffering from long winter withdrawals

On the bright side I saw the first Robin today so better times are coming :D

We have had flocks of Robins around here for weeks. The Sandhills are circling overhead. 60 degrees, sunny, very windy. I can almost hear the grass growing. Better come soon. I'm almost out of firewood.

Kurt,

"better times are coming" so you say, but it won't last and it will be winter again before you know it. That ain't no sh!t!

Woody,

I finally quit cutting firewood for this winter last weekend. This weekend I'll start cutting for next winter! It's a year around job up here in the northwoods. Well, eight out of twelve months for sure are spent either cutting, hauling, splitting or piling. It's the gosh darned hauling that takes the time.

... Jim.. as was hinted earlier... you need to take up a hobby to break up the wood hauling. Mould cutting, making sights, designing bullets... anything like that should relieve the tension   At least down here the bushfire trauma has backed off after some pretty wide spread rainfalls and even some flooding can you believe.. in some areas. No snow though... not likely.

Gavin,

Being in the woods, chainsaw in hand, is my tension relief! I am never more relaxed than when I'm in the woods, be it hunting, just walking with my dog or yes even with my chainsaw clearing dead trees. Bugs and disease have killed a good 1/3 of the trees on my land, it's just firewood for the taking now.

I do miss the bullet mold making thing though.

Fair enough too Jim. I fully understand being in the woods ( or bush as its referred to here ) being a calming ..almost therapeutic environment. Its hard to beat. Now I've experimented with reduced diameter bands on gg bullets...and entering into the realm of two diameter pp bullets now...but I'm not sure I'm ready to attempt Brents take on an 1870's Weatherby with the belted black powder cartridge case. I'll just watch.
all the best. G.

Jim,

I no longer, cut, haul, split, or stack any more. I just burn. Usually around 12-14 ricks per year. Heat both the shop and the house totally via wood. Filled my propane tank 14 years ago when I bought the house. I'm at 300 gallons, so will fill this summer finally. I only use it for cooking and to test the furnace occasionally. Cost for the wood delivered and stacked runs $50/rick. Still so much cheaper than gas. I get my mental floss from making sawdust. The occasional piece of furniture for relatives and of course the line boxes. Just finished three rifle totes as match prizes for Texas, Colorado, and Wyoming. Bringing them to Colorado to save on shipping this weekend, and while there, I'll shoot the March Watkins match. I'll be back home in time to shoot three days in Friendship the following weekend. The season begins. Yee Ha!

It is officially bluebird weather here. There is one in the backyard right now. I hope we don't get things moving too early. Those last sneaky frosts are really hard on the trees (and then everything else in its turn).

We still very likely have got another month and a half of winter . About five years back we had a big snow storm the first week of May! That was really funny as the studded tires have to be off by May 15th and the run to have them changed begins about two weeks before that. Lot of folks were caught in a big snow drop with summer tires.

It was 89 here in Clermont Fl. today, sunny, light winds. Cold front moving in for the weekend, weatherman says 70’s for Saturday...I’ll be at the range shooting all day :D

89 in the first week of March would be a killer for me. I couldn't take that. 60F is pretty over the top here and hard enough.
