1000 meter scope settings

Approx. how many minutes of elevation are needed to go from 500 meters to 1000 meters with a good 400 grain bullet in a 40-65 or a good 520 grain bullet in a 45-70?

Years ago most of us lever gun shooters hit the white buffalo at Raton with our Iron sighted 30-30's. When it came time for her turn , Jeanne insisted she do it standing...and she did.
Jeanne wants to hit it with her Scoped 40-65..standing I'll bet.

I have no idea where to start to walk her on target with our BPCR silhouette rifles.

Glen do you know the velocity? What bullet? If you are using the BACO 409400M4 you will get a pretty good estimate using a BC of 0.475 with the JBM Ballistics web page calculator. If using the Saeco #740 use a BC of 0.4. If possible, input the estimated elevation above sea level. That will be important or it could put you off by 10 or more minutes.

According to my sight setting book, In 2008 at Raton shooting my Shiloh 40-65 with a Brooks Turkey Killer weighing 410 grains and 58.5 grains of Goex FFg (yes that is what I was using then) my elevation setting was 155 or 77.5 MOA depending on how you count it with a 28" MVA scope on 17" centers. I have no idea what the muzzle velocity was.

Thank you Paul. That will certainly get us started. I do not have a chrono any more...I can guess at the BC and run it through a myriad of programs..it's just better to get advice from someone that has been where we are going.

When I ask Jeanne what she wants to do for our 43 anniversary this year her reply was " shoot a match with a BPCR rifle" ...and then she thought it would be cool to hit that Buffalo at Raton with her BPCR rifle.
We spent a few hours yesterday loading . Jeanne does everything I do except mold the bullets.

From 500 meters to 800 yards you need 40 to 50 minutes depending upon the load. This will get you on the berm. To go from 800 to 900 yards you need an additional 20 minutes. From 900 to 1,000 yards another 20 minutes.

If you are planning to shoot the buffalo and do not have a sight setting, from a 500-meter setting (Rams) come up one inch. You will be very close depending upon the load.

My sight settings are very similar, to Rick’s. My rule of thumb is about 15 minutes per 100 yard increase on the mid-range, and 20 minutes per 100 yard increase for the long range targets. You should be on or near the berm and adjust from there.

Depending on wind,light and mirage 15 minutes per 100 yards should get you close enough to see the bullet impact.
My 44 2.4 shooting a 480 gr bullet at a bit over 1300 FPS takes all but the top two lines on the MVA #2 mounts with the 1000 yard block to get the white buffalo

Now those are references I can understand. Hit the ram and then come up an inch..Screw the scope up having two lines left...Thanks Rick and Don.
A pro shooter would look at my notebook and shake their heads. My notes on hitting the buffalo with our 30-30's is " Screw the back sight as high as it will go, hold 10 feet over the buffalo's head ".

Kevin...it's easy to hit. It's a BIG target. We , and a lot of our lever action shooting buds, Have it it with our 30-30's with iron sights. Jeanne has done it many times standing, unsupported. The greatest challenge for me on that range are the 500 meter rams standing, unsupported with an iron sight 30-30.
