40-50 Sharps BN

I may be wrong but am thinking if your just neck sizing your cases and they start getting a bit tight, a trip through a 40-65 die will shrink back down the body taper and shoulder area to make them fit a bit better once again.

Just kind of taking a bit of a shot in the dark there. I know I had formed a 44-60 from a 45-70 case I had fired in a 44-77 chamber and when i pushed the neck and shoulder down with just a bushing die it seemed that the shoulder junction grew a bit. Since I don't have a chambered barrel yet and the other formed case I have is from BACO its just kind of a guessing game. Even if I were to mic the case it would still be a guess as I don't know for sure what the fired dimentions should be. Hopefully in another year I will have a working finished rifle in 44-60 and it works well. Fingers Crossed.

could happen. With the 40-65 cases, I have plenty of room for the shoulder to grow so not an issue.

Did a little more testing of dies tonight.
Found a few more that would work

After trimming a 40-65 or 40-82 Sil case to 1.775 all I need is to run them into one of the following cases I had available, listed from smallest to largest finished neck size.

6.5 Carcano FL die
6.5 Carcano Neck die
220 Swift FL die
220 Swift Neck die
303 British FL die
7.35 Carcano FL die

The 303 British worked perfect for my chamber and no final neck expanding was needed.
Only final trimming after fireforming.

I have a Shiloh Carbine on order, 24” barrel cambered for the 40-50 SBN and CH4D dies along with RCBS case forming dies that I got off FleaBay . Pretty easy forming 45-70 brass with tools that work albeit will have to expand the brass for Shilohs .408” bore and fireform . I also have a Steve Brooks adjustable original Sharps P.P. mould @ 395” . Excited to give this little gem of a cartridge a go as my Sharps deer rifle.

Went out to get sight settings@ 200 yds

Not bad for a throw together load and a poor shot.
Sub 2 moa and most was the shooter.

I like the looks of that little bottle neck cartridge.

Question: What factors would govern the choice between the 40-50 SBN and the 40-70 SBN?

Depends on what you want to do with it. I have shot silhouette with mine, but the 18” twist is a limiting factor for bullets. I have a 40-65 16” twist now. So now I need to find a new home for the 40-50.

I shot a match with mine and it took everything off but real slow. Turned a chicken
The 40-79 holds roughly 10-14 gns more in the govt case.
I just use the 285 gn bullet. With an 18 twist barrel.
It was what i speced. Im not a pro so i just enjoy it.
It grouped really good at 600 and hit the q buff four out of eight in the wind. I felt it wasnt too bad.
My daughter in law shot it and put 180 rounds through it and it was still shooting with just a blow tube. Simple and easy ctg.

Thanks. It actually showed up in about a week at my FFL guy but took over a month to go collect it and another to get off my duff and get it running.

I just reread this thread and it got me in the mood for another rifle I know that I said several times enough is enough LOL.
The last two years I been down sizing calibers and in the past I had a roller in the .40-70 BN and it just was not big enough when I was in my 30's I think this little brother of the .40-70 bn might be just the thing.
I have several switch barrel rifles and it would be easy for me to get a barrel and fit it myself on one of those actions.
If I go through with this I will have Manson make a set of reamers for the chamber and sizing die for the .40-50 bn.
