This bullet is a Two Diameter/2D Paper Patch design. a DDPPFN (DualDiameterPPFlatNose) Looks like a great hunting bullet with that large flat nose.
The base band is "Patch to Groove/Neck I,D." diameter and the body is Patch to bore/land diameter
Made for "std" GG chambers that have a neck I.D. specifically for groove diameter bullets. The patched bullet seats into the FF case neck
and the patched to bore section slides up On to the lands for perfect concentricity
SO, you can fire the cases, then clean and simply load powder and wad, and then finger seat the bullets. Always
the same neck tension as in "None" for uniformity.

A "usual" PP bullet, classically is straight bodied so All of it patches to Bore diameter. in the old days, as well as modern
rifle chambers that are specifically cut for "patch to bore" bullets, chambers were tight necked to fit.

BUT, if you have a "std" GG chamber, you will have to slightly taper crimp/resize the
neck down to be a snug, not tight fit on the patched to bore bullet. THAT WORKS YOUR BRASS.
and you may need to periodically anneal the case necks.

Tuscarora,
There are more and more people going to DDPP bullets.
Now there are about 13 of them in the Buffalo Arms catalog.
38,40,44 and 45 caliber- generally with Elliptical ogive/hemi nose. Your interest seems to be 45 caliber: JIM453545E and JIM455545E.
Take a look at past threads in Shiloh forum and in historicshooting.com discussing the 2D or DDEPP bullets.

MSalyards,

Beltfed,
Been studying up as I am very curious to head down the PP path. For that reason I have been looking at the various DD moulds out there. I have seen the BB moulds that you mentioned. From what I've been able to come across, were you involved in the development of those bullet designs?

It is easy to see the advantage of a DDPP bullet and seems the direction I would like to take. The moulds which you mentioned cast a fairly heavy and long bullet, 1.4" approximately. I've run the Greenhill formula, but want to ask about this bullet in the 45-70 with a 30"/18" twist barrel. Will I be able to push this bullet fast enough for good stability to the 1000yd line? Loaded question with variables, I know! And what alloy would you suggest?

Thanks

Beltfed,

Another newb question on the JIM453545E. When patching this bullet, would one patch this bullet to bore and groove (.450/.458), or something along the lines of .452/.460?

Thanks

Well I'd be very surprised if you could get that .452/.460" combo chambered in any Newer Shiloh I've used .might be the ticket for an early one that C Sharps put in the damned overbored freebore.

Tuscorora,
The 453545E bullet has a "patch to fire formed case I.D. base band length of 0.2"
so that is how deep (how shallow) you can seat it into the 45-70 case. So, you can
get up to a powder load for an "ordinary" gg 45-90. And enough velocity to reach
1K with your 30" /18 twist 45-70.
YOur second question:
You patch the appropriate diameterS DDEPP bullet with paper thickness such that the patched base band fits snugly
but 'finger seatable" into your Fire Formed cases. and the "patch to bore" main body slides
snugly on to the lands.
