First gong match

Post by Coltwcf44 »

I shot in my first long range gong match a couple of weeks ago at Heart Mountain Rod and Gun Club in Powell WY. Targets were from 250 yds out 1000 yds. I ended up hitting 15 out of 36 shots with 3 on the 1000 and 3 on the 800. I surprised myself. But, I must admit I had a good spotter who helped me a lot with sight settings. Previously I had only shot out to 600 yds. Being a good spotter is equally important as being a good shooter, I think. I know he helped me way more than I was able to help him. But I learned a lot and am looking forward to the next time I get a chance to attend a long range gong match.

If you get the chance do it. It's a good time and the other shooters were helpful, friendly and patient. I also learned how to hold a Sharps correctly for off hand shooting. I was holding it like aWinchester and had no hits at 250 yds with it waving around. Hope to do better next time.

Get on the stick and load enough ammunition to go to the Medicine Rocks shoot north of Ekalaka Mt usually held the weekend after labor day.

I didn't know they still shot at Powel!? Does anybody have a link or contact info?

Good shooting by the way, it will just continue to get more fun the more you shoot.

Contact info for the Powell WY gong match is listed in the Black Powder Cartridge News on page 62 of the fall issue. With corn silage harvest going on now and beet harvest coming up in October, I dont see much time to get away. I'm going to start planning and practicing for next year, though. Hope to see you all down the trail.
