old primers, boom or bust?

Post by kmk »

A couple days ago i mentioned to a friend that I was down to 400 primers and couldn't find them any where. He said he had gotten all of a late uncles shooting stuff and was sure there were primers. What I got was 3000 RWS large rifle primers, made in Germany, from 1967, 1400 CCI #200 from I believe 1957,{Cascade cartridge Inc.}, and 1700 Fed. 210 from 1960. The Fed. 210's were in wood trays. I remember from my muzzle loading days that the RWS caps were the hot caps. The RWS and FED.210 were the old bronze color. All are bright and shiney inside and out and had been stored indoors. All in un-opened boxes. The CCI were marked at $8.00 per 1000. I've loaded 5 of each with my favorite load and will give them a whirl on Tuesday. If they work out I'll have enough to keep me going for a good while and the price was 0. Comments? Thanks, Ken K.

I'd be surprised if they don't work fine as long as they were stored properly. You know the days of buying what you want , when you want, for how much you want to pay are long gone. Since way back before Sandyhook if you think about it. If shooting is important to you as an activity you need to get with the program and buy supplies way before your out. Bobw

I have some Alcan and CCI primers from back around that time and the same price range that I found stuck on the upper shelf behind some HP bullets I have not used for many years. I gave the bullets to a couple friends that shoot those calibers because I will never use them up.
I been using the primers lately just to use them up and they work just fine, never misses a lick. Surprising, the Alcan Max Fire shot better then the Fed Match in the .44-2.6.

You might check with MidSouth Shooters for some. I just got a sleeve of Fed Gold Match from them not long ago and they also had some different Rem and Russian.

When my grandfather passed away in the early 80's I inherited quite a fair amount of his reloading supplies. I have primers from the sixties that work fine still to this day. I have a pound of of IMR 4064 that has a price tag of $2 and some change that is the absolute best shooting powder in my wife's 7mm short mag. I save that powder for her gun exclusively.

On the other hand ... I used some old and assorted odd primers to load ammo for a fun match at the local club, and had a batch of hang-fires, mis-fires, and bloopers that spoiled the day.

I was just going to place an order for bore brushes at Scheels and I did a search for primers they have primers in stock. So if you have a Scheels close by there you go. :) I don't think they shi[p primers.

I got to try those old primers yesterday .Aside from hitting consistently 2 inches lower than the 215s I've been using, they worked just fine. The 210s probably a little better than the others. Fish on! Ken K.
