A question for people shooting .40-65

Post by Firehand »

Say a 30" barrel, firing a 400-grain bullet

If you're zeroed at 200 yards, how many minutes elevation do you dial in to be on at 300? Then 400?

My son and I both shoot 40-65 loaded with 61 grains of 1 1/2 Swiss, shooting 410 grain bullets. As a rule of thumb, we use about 15 minute per 100 yards for any thing under 500 yards. While not exact, you will see the bullet impact very near the target and can dial your sight in from there.

Thank you Arnie for sharing your 40-65 load. It is very helpful and informative to read other shooter's data and tools. For example, this is the first that I have heard of "Helical drop tube." I agree that the 371 gr DDEPP is a dandy bullet.

Good Shooting,

Billhux, I’ve shot pigs and I’ve shot turkey, but never at the same distance twice. The sight adjustments you provided are good data, but for those of us who don’t know the established range of the targets of which you speak, could you please give critter and distance? Thank you

Castaway,
Just above Billhux' sight settings,
CW50-70 answered your question on the distances for BPCR,
namely chickens,pigs, turkeys and rams

You have to excuse my ignorance. I saw CW50-70’s post but had no idea the ranges he mentioned applied to pigs and turkey and such. So much to learn. Thanks for the clarification

Standard distances are:
chickens - 200m
pigs - 300m
turkeys - 385m
rams - 500m

There are a couple of ranges that are 500yd for rams, but that is non-standard.

Your changes from 700 to 800 to 900 with the mva iron sight looks a little suspect ??
