4fa powder vs 1.5 fg powder

Post by Tmacmi »

I have an original 1853 slant breach with a 20" barrel in .44 caliber.

In the past I shot it with Swiss 1 1/2 fg with moderate accuracy. I recently came upon a dealer close by that sells fa powder. I ended up buying 4fa.

I've done a bit of research on the differences and asked on other boards and the consensus seams to be that it will be a satisfactory alternative.

While it has larger spread of grain sizes, including a fair bit of 1fg screen size, it will burn faster because it is not tumbled and retains more surface area.

It will burn cleaner because it does not contain any graphite.

Does anybody here have any experience.

Thank you in advance.

It’s fireworks powder, probably not a real good choice, bet it’s hot and dry.

The 4fa powder is a Schuetzen powder.

What does dry mean in relationship to black powder

It's the fowling he is alluding to. Some granulations and brands produce a softer, moister, fouling.
