Who makes or carries good quality wad punches?

Evening gents,

Looking to use newspaper sheets between base of bullet and wad.

1. Who makes good quality punches? Not seeing anything very impressive, edges quite rough and non-hardened. Best ones I've seen were at home depot, smooth grind and hardened but they were in fraction sizes.

2. Looking for 45 and 40 cal.

3. For those of you using newspaper wads this way do you typically use one wad or two?

In the FWIW category, I tried to use a case with champhered mouth as a punch, folded the edge with first hit, then tapped a case and used it in drill press. It worked after a fashion. PITA to get them out and after a bit the mouth started to roll in. Was using a plastic cutting board for backer.

Figured to get a good punch and be done with it.

Another vote here for the Cornell , press mounted wad punches. I've three in different calibres and they've been a dream to use. Few more dollars than buying a straight hole punch but effortless to use.

I’ve got a forester co-axe press, would it work in that?

Press mounted wad punch from Buffalo Arms is the way to go.
Mine will cut clean everything from newsprint to .060" high density polyethylene.
Can't answer your question about a coax press. Don't know.
Works great with a Rockchucker.

BACo and Track of the Wolf. I use a 32cal in 35cal, 38cal punch for 40cal loads and 35cal punch for 38cal. They drop right in and do whats needed. Full sized can be a pita to get to the bottom of the case for over-primer wads and same at the top if you have much compression. Suppose if I ever shot a blunderbuss (something larger than 40cal) I would use a 44 in a 45cal and a 45 in a 50cal. Might as well make life as easy as possible.

Does it not work in the co-axe because the bottom flange of the punch ram is too thick to fit under the slider plates?

If so could the bottom flange be turned down to the thickness of say a 45-70 rim?

After a closer look, I do think that would work using the S plates in the bottom. The bottom flange is just too thick for the plates to lock on top of it.

Find a shop with a lathe and turn the base down like you said or do it carefully on side of the grinder wheel or belt sander. There is no pull down pressure that will do any damage to the pin.
You might have to use a .40-70 shell holder because the .45-70 is too large.

Bought a 3/8" paper punch on Amazon. Works great for newspaper and filter paper for both the 40 and 45. Cost $2

I use the 38 caliber one to put them inside my 40-70, and the 40 caliber inside my 45 cases. Fast and easy. I got mine from BACO. Best press mount wad punch.

Yes, Fred Cornell the best there is for press mounted wad punches, I have the .447, .450 & .460 and would like a couple more. Used to use the hammer & punch method, slow, laborious, and not very satisfying.

I mounted the wad punch on an old Liberty "O" press that I picked up at a local gun show for $5.00. The ram was a tad loose but perfect for a dedicated wad punch press.

My favored way to punch wads is to run the punch in a drill press at low RPMs. You can make wads as fast as you can work the handle.
