Bullet that fits the barrel (sounds like 0.410-0.411, although a 0.409 bullet may work just fine if not cast too hard. Bullet seated until the lands enough that you can feel it as you close the lever. Start with a 0.030-0.060" poly or veggie wad and enough powder to have slight compression. Load that and successive 1 grain powder loads until you get to 0.200-0.250" compression. Shoot 3 shot groups with each of those loads--you'll find one or two loads that shoot significantly better than the others. When you see a load that looks better, load 5 rounds of that load and 1/2 grain less and 1/2 grain more and shoot to confirm a good load.

Personally, I prefer the 3 shot groups vs. the popular ladder test with single shots--to much chance of a poor shot with only one. I also pay a lot more attention to the vertical than the horizontal, because we always have varying crosswinds at our house.
