Blackhorn 209

Post by mongo40 »

Has anyone tried this Blackhorn powder? I"ve got two containers of it and thought I'd give it a try but haven't found much info on it other than using it in an Inline rifle.

Western Powders has cartridge data on their web page.
I've used it in the 45-70. Seems to work best with magnum rifle primers.
But other that running at higher pressures, could really see where it did anything better than a good blackpowder load

If I remember correctly, there are specific cleaning instructions when using Blackhorn 209.
I hope somebody who shoots BH 209 will address this further.

Keep on hav'n fun!

There is a cleaner for BH209, but it really doesn't do a whole lot better if any job than Hoppe's or other. The main thing is to not use a water based cleaner with it.
It also tends to let a white moldy fuzz grow on the cases after you clean them. I think the best thing with the cases is to clean them in Simple Green, and then after they dry run them thru the tumbler.
The higher pressure the stuff runs at pretty much mandates full length resizing.
In the end it's basically shooting a smokeless powder with fake smoke added, except for it can cause some corrosion and rust if not treated properly after firing.
After going thru several cans of the stuff, it's just as well to use blackpowder.

Very different views from whats being said about it over on Castboolits, they talk about no fouling, no wiping between shots and cleanup is really easy that it just leaves a grey dust in barrel that aides in lubing. Was just curious about the stuff, I've got a couple of bottles of it and thought I'd play with it, won't last long, I think the bottles are just 10oz.

Lot of people around here use it exclusively. Pm hipshot1 on here. He can probably give you some good recommenations. This is not a 209 friendly crowd.

I won a can and cleaner at the Quigley one year several years ago and still have it. I been wanting to give it to a shooter that uses it but I keep forgetting to pack it in the camper :D

Smokeless does the same thing.

As hard as it is to find reloading supplies right now I'm not above playing with what ever I can get my hands on if it lets me go shoot. I was interested in trying this stuff in a couple of 45/70s I have and see what it would do.

I use Blackhorn in a 45-70, it is a very good powder dont let the people tell you it is not. have way more than my share of trophies to prove it. the only thing that i have found wrong with it is the price. If you would like some advice on what i do pm me, I'll be happy to help you.

If you are really interested, get ahold of Hipshot, I can vouch for him and his family and the accuracy they have achieved with this powder. If you beat anyone of them in the game we play up here, you have had a very good day of shooting.

Due to the phenomenal success of Dave and family, they rarely loose, I thought I'd give 209 a try, that is until I checked the price at Cabela's up here. It was $69.95 for that 10 oz. bottle and that was five years ago. Right there the test came to a screeching halt.

How good is old hipshot. Let me brag on my friend for a bit. A few years ago Dave won a Browning Low-wall with the whippy octagonal sport weight barrel. That was in Medicine Rocks. The next weekend on The Big Hill I noticed him practicing with it in box stock condition. I asked if he planned to shoot it in the match? He said yes but he hadn't had a chance to try it until today. I walked away thinking I might have a chance to beat him, finally. Nope, the son of a gun shot a 40/40 later the same day. Good shooting Dave.

I use BH209 in my inline Muzzy hunting rifle. It cleans up fine. I use 10-1 distilled water and Napa cutting oil 2-3 wet patches then a couple dry. I have no idea what it does in a cartridge gun but there are loads for it on the site. And yes you do not have to swab between shots. I've shot upwards of 60 shots with out swabbing , but you must clean the breech plug every 10 - 15 shots.

I was unaware that BACO had run out of black powder
