Hey Grumpy Bear. I tried the 409 yesterday, and here is the result.

swiss 1 1/2, one 030 and two paper wads
little or no compression.
420 BA 409420M2 bullet.
100 yards.

65 grains. not so good. 4 inch spread
63 better 3 inches
60 grains. 1 3/8 inch group. (one flyer. I shot two groups like this.
Now. I'll try 58 and 62 next time.

in my 408 400 BA, it shot well with 63....so I'll go at that again...
so far...so good.
and thanks...Ken

Glad that they are working for you, if you need more let me know. That 60 grain load shows good vertical.

Dumb but happy, how do you decrease the load from 65 grains to 58 grains when the 65 grain load had little compression? I assume that the seating depth stays the same so how do you fill the extra 7 grains of empty volume? I need to start fine tuning my 40-70 SS loads and I have 3 different bullet lengths so was wondering if I start with a load for each individual bullet where the Swiss 1.5 is barely compressed, do I just add wads to change compression? Then if I want to go up in charge, it is easy to compress more but have no idea how to decrease the charge. Tom :?:

This is the best load out of my Shiloh in .40-70SS.
60.5gr of 2F Swiss, 410gr RCBS bullet @ 20:1, white card wad, CCI large rifle primer, BACO stretched .30-40Krag cases.
Group on 500m ram swinger. The low shot was me. Same load printed 3 consecutive shots side by side the width of my fingers
on a splash plate next to the Ram but I can't find the photo. ( Therefore it didn't happen?? )

Hey Bulseye. nope, I adjusted the compression die and the seating depth a little. still little or no compression on the load.
but...I have still to try the 58 load. tomorrow...Ken
