Powder-settling vibrator

Post by opencountry »

Can anyone suggest a small electric or battery-operated vibrating stand/plate to be used to settle metered powder before compressing? I would like to find one that has an ‘adjustable’ vibration. Any help would be appreciated.

My wife Jeanne shoots and loads with me. There are two steps she refuses to do...casting and drop tubing.
She won't cast because she has heard my tales of accidents and molten lead. NO Drop tubing because she doesn't see the logic before compressing the
powder.

I watched a video that I think Wayne Mclerean made ref vibrating or drop tubing. That gave me the idea to use my dog clippers to vibrate the shell
loading block to settle the powder. That worked well so now we do that.

I wondered about a vibrating plate also and I think I have seen a vibrating foot massager somewhere. That would be handy I think and I'll try it
if I find one in wally world.

Robert,

Do you have an old Electric Razer laying around in a drawer? That is what many have used until they went back to drop tubing. We've been down this road so many times. If you want a variable speed one there are several places you can find them and that is the reason for the     When I tried it I found that it was very hard to keep the powder from jumping out of the case with my old Phillishave. YMMV

It may have been an issue of BPCR magazine where I read about a guy holding a powder charged case on the top of a vibratory case cleaner for 2-3 seconds to settle or compact the powder. Might be a bit annoyingly noisy though.

Thanks everyone,
After reading the replies I’m staying with what has always worked good - drop-tubing. If it’s not broke, don’t fix it.

Smart man. Thank you for reading between the lines. If there are 100 shooters at a match 99 will be drop tubing, there is a reason.

Thnx Paul. I recently bought/received a new 16# 45-110 Shiloh. I scoped it with a 10X MVA. I’ve been working up some Swiss pp loads for it. Last week I went out with it and shot some old Goex pp loads in it that I had loaded for my first 16# 45-110. The very first three shots I shot that day with it went into the same hole at 100 yards, a true 1/8”-3/16” c-c group. I was a little excited! And, I shot an excellent group with my old 45-110 with some 111.0 grain Swiss loads. I want to say it again, all my loads were pp. We’ve heard it before, but I gotta say it again - these Shilohs are really something. They’re able; we’ve just got to figure out what they want.
Btw, all loads were drop-tubed.

Congratulations Robert that is fantastic. I would also like to ask when you learned not to take the fourth shot when you have a group like that going.

Paul, it took guts to squeeze off the third shot into that one-hole group!
And, this is my custom 16# 45-110. The team at Shiloh built this heavy-antiqued rifle’s walnut forestock to match an original period Sharps buffalo rifle from the book ‘Sharps’ by Frank Sellers; they did a excellent job!
