Dual diameter 40-82 revisited

Finally got my ducks in a row so I can test some loads with the JIM403415E
My first try on a shot up gong a month or so ago showed real promise.
So I finally got to put it on "paper"

I switched to heavier paper cause I didn't like the bullet loose in the case like it was with 8 lb paper.

5 shots were just barely over 1 moa at 300 yds.
last shot was with the 8 lb paper and it shot an inch low.

Brian, that is a darn good group. Is that the refrigerator door "gong". My best group so far in my .40-82 was with the DD bullets you gave me to try. So that's the next mold to acquire.

Very nice,

It’s definitely working.

Yea. Still waiting on my gong hanger to be built and the neighbor to move his cows so I can shoot further , so I'm availing myself to the unlimited supply of doors from the dump next door.

this bullet doesn't quite fit the Crossno chamber in this Browning. Its either .001 undersized in the major diameter for the 8 lb paper or .001 oversized in the minor dia for the 9 paper. I'm having to cam the shell in because the bore section is tight, but sure seems to work.

semtav,
YOU could use a NOE Nose Sizer to fix that problem with
the 9#paper being tight on the bore ride minor diameter.

Thanks I'll have to give that a try sometime and see what it does

I didnt pick this bullet because i have freebore or want to cut down on powder, i picked it to prevent the dreaded Desert Deuce Syndrome.

brian,
with a bullet so tight in the rifling that you have to cam the round into the chamber you run a risk.
this is that the bullet can be forced back onto the powder enough to alter powder compression.
this in itself might not matter if it is consistent for every shot, but it might vary.
not only might compression vary, but so also would cartridge o.a.l.
bullets so sized are excellent for breech seating bullets prior to chambering a charged case.
a thing that might help them to slide in is to lubricate the patch.
while this can in some instances enhance accuracy, in others it might do the opposite.
i patched some bullets and applied different lube, and left them on the bench for a long time.
the lube which affected the patch the least was tallow.
this was made by rendering the fat from around a sheep's kidneys, called suet.
it keeps for years unrefrigerated.
ideally, for fixed ammo, it is better to get a bullet mould of correct major and minor diameters with whatever paper you use.
some have found that 8 lb paper shoots better than 9 lb, but others use 9 lb very successfully.
my own thoughts on your bullet situation are that a nice fit in the bore and 0.001" small in the case has a lot to offer if the ammunition can function well, as in the bullet staying in the case while loading the gun.
reason being that the bullet will align well in the bore, and any looseness in the case will allow this alignment to continue right to the base.
bruce.

Thanks Bruce
I'll keep that in mind. I'm sure you're right about the paper plus I like working with 8 lb way better than 9 lb.

My test on the gong at 800 yards was with 8 lb and it showed almost no vertical from what I thought I could see.

The local slaughterhouse used to save Tallow for me back when I played with that Greasy stuff. I'm sure I've still got some up here somewhere.

minimal vertical at 800 sounds really good.

Bryan,
Your making this very tempting changing my Browning .40-65. I have a reamer that would match that chamber.

Life would be so much simpler if we were just one gun shooters.
But not near as much fun!!

Brian, I am just getting ready to load this same bullet in a 1/14 twist 40/90BN. Interesting reading your initial tests. I too have the same 8# paper, this for a Shiloh chamber. Planning on a full load of 1Fg Swiss.

I have a friend that keeps telling me, "beware of the man with just one gun" when I show up with a different rifle and load going into a match :D

But it would make life easier.......I think....
