Groove diameter paper patch

Post by ian45662 »

Has anyone in here played with groove diameter or almost groove diameter paper parch bullets? Anyone having any luck with them ? I just got one to play with and just my limited testing is showing a great deal of potential especially for the purpose of reduced loads for chickens.

Yes been all I've been shooting for the last 5 or 6 years.but almost strictly for long range. No experience with reduced loads.

Works quite well indeed, is my go-to load for long range in my no.2 musket.

Wish you guys would make up your minds on PP. Straight-side bullet, DEPP, patch to bore diameter, patch to groove diameter. One mold of each is all ready up to $800 and we have not started to discuss bullet weight/length. Maybe we can get the mold makers to rent "test molds" till we can get an idea of what works in our rifle(s).

Actually, they'll all work, provided you put in the required time and effort for load development.
The groove dia. by necessity will use less powder, which can be an advantage with bigger cases. There's something to please everyone 🤣

I have tried 2 different papers with the .451 bullets. My rifle seems to like them patched to a diameter of .456 better than .458. It really liked it when I smeared some case lube on the paper before loading the projectiles. That really surprised me.

Ian - Have you tried chambering and extracting one with and one without lube to see if there might be any indication as to why?

No but that’s a good idea. I will have to try that in a few days and see if it will give any clues.

I recently tried some paper patched bullets with more than 2 wraps of Seth Cole 55w. The largest diameter slick mold that I have is a BACO .444” 530 gn. Rather than buying a new mold or using thicker paper I made templates for 3 & 4 wrap lengths. I also seated the bullet a little father into the case than when making my bore diameter PP bullets. 72 gns of 2f O.E. with a 1/16” veggie wad compressed down to about .450” below the case mouth. I made a cartridge seating tool to seat the bullets into the rifling. The 3 wrap diameter comes to about .452” and the 4 wrap diameter comes to about .445”. They shot fairly well and I was kinda surprised they did so well. I was wiping after every shot and got some decent 1” groups with these loads. I will experiment more with this. Of course I could buy a lager diameter mold or use thicker paper but just wanted to see what would happen with more than 2 wraps.

Sorry, typo - the 4 wrap bullet comes out to .454 diameter.
