Hi All...

I'm looking to start my load development and I was wanting to use an over primer wad (nitrite paper). I ordered some from Amazon and this is what came. It seems a little thick and I just wanted to make sure this is the right stuff before I start using up precious components...Here's what I got, if its not the right stuff can you post a photo of the label that I should be looking for? Thanks!!

Give white coffee filter paper a try.
Leaves no ash.

Only one way to find out and that is try it. Who knows, you may be on to something of benefit to all of us.

For 44 & 45 caliber BPC Rifle and black powder I use what feels like tag paper 8 to 9 thousandths thick cut with a 40 cal wad punch. Use a 38 cal rifle punch for a 40 cal and 35 cal pistol for 38 cal rifle. I like white so when I drop it in the mouth of the case I can more easily ensure visually that it is lying flat in the bottom of the case before adding powder.

For the most part I am no longer using the over primer wad in 38 or 40 caliber.

That is the stuff I have been using for close to 20 years. However I use the Ashless.

2 Pedersoli 5@200 wins. The chronograph says it works, less than 1 MOA vertical at 1 mile.

I know at least 2 National champions that use them.

Interesting Kenny. A bit more information please.

Where do you obtain the material that you use for over primer wads and what exactly do you specify when ordering.

And, if it is nitrite paper does it require any particular storage requirements?

The info originally came from Dan as we were collaborating on primer wads, I mentioned the use of Ashless filter paper in lab work when I was working in a coal lab. Thus we went this route.

It is not nitrated and requires no special storage requirements. I get it through Amazon these days.

Staple 4 circles, then use BACO bench press wad punch.

Kenny W.,

I've been using waxed paper over primer "discs". Have you tried them and how do you compare them to the ones you noted above?

.40 2 1/2, Old E 1 1/2 Books PP DD bullet.

Thanks!

Tom

I use primer wads punched out of coffee filter paper. Here's an article on primer wad experimenting I wrote some time ago:

So here's the chrono results I got from a run of Swiss powder...72 gr 1.5F caviar, 40 cal low ash over-primer wad, compression die set at .300", .060 Walter wad, a "slick" color newsprint wad between the fiber wad and the bullet, and a 535 gr Brooks mold (new Postell) cast from range scrap with a little tin mixed in...

Pretty damn impressive numbers .300 compression of Swiss  i am not shocked.

I ran more than that in my 38-50 with Swiss and it shot quite well.

Reference the 2015 Midrange Prone Nationals scope class.

Those are eye opening numbers good for you.
